A knowledgeable interventional cardiologist, Dr. Al-Joundi is a Partner at Gateway Cardiology, P.C. in Saint Louis, Missouri.

He maintains a clinical office-based practice in addition to performing procedures, which include cardiac catheterization, cardiac and peripheral vascular balloon angioplasty and stenting. He also implants permanent pacemakers including cardiac resynchronization devices (biventricular pacemakers) used for the treatment of congestive heart failure.

With a broad educational background, Dr. Al-Joundi graduated with his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine of Damascus University in Syria. He then relocated to the United States, performing both his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in cardiology at SSM Saint Louis University Hospital in 1997 and 2000, respectively. 

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC), the doctor is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and interventional cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Furthermore, he is board-certified in nuclear cardiology by the Certification Board of Nuclear Cardiology.

In Missouri, Dr. Al-Joundi is affiliated with Mercy Hospital St. Louis, Mercy Hospital South, St. Luke’s Des Peres Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital, and the Heart Center at Jersey Community Hospital.

Interventional cardiology is the subspecialty of cardiology that deals specifically with the catheter-based treatment of heart diseases. The field includes the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease, vascular disease, and acquired structural heart disease. An interventional cardiologist is a cardiologist with one to two years of additional education and training in diagnosing and treating cardiovascular disease, as well as congenital and structural heart conditions through catheter-based procedures, such as angioplasty and stenting.
