Get to know Electrophysiologist Dr. Jose M. Marcial Suarez, who serves patients in Cayey, Puerto Rico.

Dr. Suarez is a fellowship-trained electrophysiologist who treats heart rhythm problems. At present, he works at Cayey Menonite Medical Center in Cayey, Puerto Rico.

Cayey Mennonite Medical Center, home of the Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, is the only one in Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and Latin America accredited by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery & Surgical Review Corporation. It has a capacity of 231 beds and a medical tower with 46 offices in which there are 21 specialties available for the entire community.

A member of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Suarez is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and clinical cardiac electrophysiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

The doctor’s acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned his medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in 2010. He then went on to complete his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the University of Puerto Rico. Wanting to further his training, he relocated to the United States where he completed an additional fellowship in clinical cardiac electrophysiology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Clinical cardiac electrophysiology (also referred to as cardiac electrophysiology, arrhythmia services, or electrophysiology), is a branch of the medical specialty of cardiology and is concerned with the study and treatment of rhythm disorders of the heart. An electrophysiologist is a type of cardiologist. They focus on the heart’s timing, or electrical system, and on diagnosing and treating irregular heartbeats or arrhythmias. They are also qualified to perform special tests of the heart’s electrical system, such as an electrophysiology study or an ablation.
