Dr. Correa’s Commitment to Diversity, Mentorship, and Health Equity Shines Through in His Role at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and the Lerner College of Medicine

Ricardo Correa, M.D., Ed. D., F.A.C.E., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.M.Q. is a Clinical Professor of Medicine, the Director for Diversity, equity and Inclusion, for mentoring and Belonging  and the Director for Longitudinal Curriculum at The Lerner College of Medicine and the School of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. He is the Program Director for the Endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism fellowship and the Director for health equity and Inclusive Initiatives at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. In addition he is the battalion surgeon for the 492 civil affair unit of the army reserve. He is member and leader in many of the internal medicine and endocrinology organizations.

“I love training future endocrinologists and seeing how they grow from not understanding anything in endocrine to becoming my colleagues,” Dr. Correa said. “It’s more rewarding than seeing my growth. In the end, a mentor always wants their mentees to become better than them. That is my goal.”

Dr. Correa’s remarkable journey began at the University of Panama, where he completed his Medical Degree and a Master’s in Education. His dedication to research was further solidified during a fellowship in epidemiology and tropical disease at the Gorgas Commemorative Institute of Health Studies in Panama City. After relocating to the United States, Dr. Correa completed his internal medicine residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital-University of Miami (U.M.), receiving the prestigious A.O.A. and GoldDOC Award in 2012. Subsequently, he pursued a clinical and research fellowship in endocrinology at the National Institutes of Health, focusing on neuroendocrinology and adrenals.

Dr. Correa’s commitment to medical education and physician well-being extends beyond his directorship roles. He has actively participated in various local, regional, and national organizations, including the American Medical Association Joy in Medicine organization, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Medical Specialties, and the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. His involvement in these organizations underscores his dedication to improving medical education and ensuring the well-being of healthcare professionals.

A recognized leader in the medical community, Dr. Correa serves on committees for the American College of Physicians, the American Thyroid Association American Association of Clinical Endocrinology ,  Endocrine Society and many others.  He is board of trustee of intealth, he chair the Clinical Practice Guidelines from AACE, he chair the Pituitary and adrenal special interest group at the endocrine society, he is board of directors of NHMA, AFMR, Arizona medical association and AMCNO. 

Dr. Correa is board-certified in Medical Quality and has authored the book “Case Report: Basics and Publication.” He is also the senior co-editor of “Endocrinology of Aging.” His research interests center on neuroendocrinology, particularly pituitary and adrenal tumors, as well as addressing healthcare disparities in diabetes within Latinx populations. His clinical focus is on serving transgender and underserved populations, and he is an active member of the LGBTQ national medical organization.

As the Medical Director of an endocrinology and diabetes clinic he established in an underserved area of Phoenix, Dr. Correa is dedicated to improving access to healthcare for marginalized communities. His volunteer work with the 100 Angels group, which provides screenings for asylum patients, reflects his commitment to humanitarian efforts. Furthermore, he actively mentors underrepresented minorities, guiding them toward careers in medicine.

Dr. Correa’s contributions to medicine have been recognized through numerous awards, including being named a Presidential Leadership Scholar, one of the 100 Hispanic Inspiring Scientists, and receiving the National Minority Quality Forum’s 40 Under 40 Award. He has also received the Humanitarian Award from the Arizona Medical Association and the Society of General Internal Medicine’s Herbert W. Nickens Minority Health and Representation in Medicine Award, among many others. 

With over 100 peer-reviewed publications and more than 70 articles to his name, Dr. Correa is a prolific contributor to the medical literature. He serves as an associate editor or editor in chief for journal of investigative medicine, endocrine practice, jcem case report, JMIR diabetes, cirrus, Journal of  NHMa. Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Correa enjoys playing the saxophone, hiking with his family, and exploring different cultures through travel. His multifaceted interests reflect his holistic approach to life and medicine.
