Notably, he has provided medical care to members of the Dallas Cowboys during their training camp in Austin, as well as to players from the Austin Ice Bats hockey team and athletes from Southwestern University, in addition to numerous college and high school athletes. For 15 years, he served as a traveling team physician for the men's alpine downhill US Olympic Ski Team, offering on-the-hill medical race coverage in North America and Europe, including qualifying races for the Winter Olympics. Dr. Cunningham's expertise extends beyond professional athletes to include dedicated weekend warriors such as runners, skiers (both downhill and snowboard), and tennis and golf enthusiasts. Following his medical school and residency training in Dallas, he pursued a sports medicine/knee fellowship under the guidance of the renowned orthopedic specialist, Dr. Richard Steadman, in Vail, Colorado. Additionally, he underwent further training in shoulder procedures in England and Canada. During his time with Dr. Steadman, the pioneer of the widely acclaimed microfracture cartilage treatment technique, Dr. Cunningham developed a keen interest in the management of cartilage injuries. As a result, he has accumulated over two decades of experience in surgical microfracture and related procedures. In recent years, he has diligently kept abreast of the latest advancements in the field, closely monitoring cutting-edge techniques tailored for acute and chronic issues. This includes the utilization of biologics such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and Cell-Based (formerly known as "Stem Cell") therapy.
