What causes indigestion?
Indigestion is a very vague term. The most common cause of indigestion is acid reflux. This is seen commonly in people who are overweight, eat late at night, eat spicy food and high fat food. Treatment involves correcting the above factors and taking anti acid medication such as H2 bickers like ranitidine or Proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole. Peptic ulcers can also cause indigestion and are associated with the use of NSAIDs like ibuprofen or naproxen. A bacteria called H pylori is associated with peptic ulcers. The same medications listed above are use to treat these conditions. If your symptoms return after a 2 week course of these medications or do not improve you should seek an appointment with a medical professional. READ MORE
My mother has a problem of impacted stools. What can we do for it?
It will depend on how long the problem has existed. If it is a recent problem you can try using a mineral oil enema from the drug store followed by a bottle of Magnesium citrate. It is important to drink 5-6 glasses of water daily to keep the stools soft. If the problem has been going on for more than 3 weeks I would take her to the doctor to make sure she does not have a partial obstruction. READ MORE
