  • Should my child be secluded during his chemotherapy?

While your child's immune system is declined during chemotherapy, he should be secluded from public spaces with large crowds, and minimize the time he is in public spaces in general. However it should be fine for him to be around family and friends as long as none of them has signs or symptoms of being sick (such as fever, runny nose, cough). Bonnie W. • Will chemotherapy make my child anemic?

Most chemotherapy will make the patient anemic, and sometimes blood transfusions may be needed. I wish the best for your child during treatment. Bonnie W. • What are the factors to consider before a bone marrow transplant?

Depending on the age of your child, there are things to consider before a bone marrow transplant that your child's transplant doctor will discuss. They will be testing for infection risk, blood type, dental status, fertility preservation, heart function, kidney function, liver function and general blood work. I wish the best for your child. • Is there a specific diet advised for people undergoing chemo?

There is a lot of research to be done on this topic. For the most part I encourage people to continue to have a healthy diet, and to definitely maintain nutrition, eat and stay hydrated, even though they may not feel hungry after getting chemotherapy. Nutrition is needed for repair and recovery. Bonnie W. • Why is my son's immunity so low even after recovering from cancer?

So glad to hear your son is a cancer survivor! Chemotherapy basically cleans out the immune system, and just like a newborn, it takes some time for his immunity to build back up. In fact, getting colds are helping him build his immunity back up. His doctors are following his immunity. If he starts getting very serious infections like pneumonias more frequently, then he may need more testing to figure out what is going on. I wish him continued health and success. Bonnie W. • Why does my son's platelet count keep dropping during his chemotherapy sessions?

Chemotherapy is going to bring down all the types of cells in your son's blood, including the platelets (as well as his red blood cells and white blood cells). If the platelets go too low or if he is bleeding, we would support him with a platelet transfusion. I wish him all the best with his therapy. Bonnie W. • What does proton therapy involve?

Thank you for your question. Proton therapy is a way to treat tumors with an accurate beam of protons aimed at the tumor. It is generally not painful, and your child will need to hold still for it. After treatment the skin or scalp can become irritated, and your child may feel fatigued or get headaches. Let your providers know if she develops any side effects. Bonnie W. Lau, MD, PhD READ MORE

  • What conditions are required for a bone marrow transplant?

I hope your nephew's bone marrow transplant goes well. There are many criteria for a bone marrow transplant to be safely approved, including finding a best matched donor, the clinical status and lab work of the patient and donor, and the status of the disease. Bonnie W. Lau, MD, PhD READ MORE

  • What is the course of treatment for sickle cell anemia in a 8 year old child?

Depending on the type of sickle cell anemia, the course of treatment and follow up is slightly different. At the same time, all sickle cell anemia patients will need penicillin prophylaxis, boosters of immunizations, and it is very important to call the Hematologist with any fever so your child can be evaluated promptly.
