Cold Plunge Time!
One of my favorite things to do is cold plunges. What is that? Well, it’s pretty simple. It is when one jumps, plunges, or immerses oneself into a cold body of water. There is only a brief amount of time spent in that cold water, typically 15-60 seconds, before needing to exit the water.Now,...
Tips For Dealing With Smoky Environments With Dr. Sarah Sue Myers
The smoke is out all across the U.S. west coast and beyond. I want to honor and thank all the fire fighters out there, working hard to contain these fires. I used to fight forest fires, before I entered the world of medicine. It’s hard to believe this was an environment I used to work in for six...
How do I get rid of oral thrust?
Think microbiome / health bacteria of gut (which begins in your mouth) - the thrush is caused by a harmful microbe that happens to LOVE sugar. You can begin by cutting out sugar, alcohol and refined foods from your diet for several weeks. Add in more vegetables, beans, seeds (all FIBER - food that the healthy bacteria love). Probiotic can be helpful. Avoid yogurt - too much sugar. See how you feel after that. Not a quick or easy fix, but certainly sustainable. READ MORE
Can you treat insomnia?
Yes, insomnia can be addressed and resolved. I have done it successfully with MANY of my patients. It is not the same treatment for every patient. READ MORE
My wife is suffering from adenomyosis. Will ayurvedic medicines be able to help her?
It really depends on what your wife is committed to trying, and the trust and therapeutic relationship she will have with a practitioner. Many holistic therapies - Ayurvedic, Naturopathic, and other traditional therapies - require a shift in mindset, lifestyle and implementing diet and herbs and supplements. All have benefits and should be considered. Does not have to be all at once, but she has to be committed to trying it out herself, as it is her care. Other therapeutics to consider would be constitutional homeopathy, post-partum doula, counseling. The mental emotional physical relationship is important to acknowledge and respect. READ MORE
Can probiotics cause gas and stomach pain?
They can. Especially if you are just beginning them. I call this "turf wars"... where healthy bacteria from probiotic are entering the picture and fighting for real estate in the gut. There is often push back and die off from not so beneficial bacteria. Also, if there is any picture of SIBO in a person, probiotics may make symptoms worse. Highly recommend consulting a naturopathic doctor to help navigate further. They have deep knowledge and education pertaining to gut health. READ MORE
Is CBT effective for anorexia?
It can be. There is really no one size fits all, when it comes to a specific condition and therapy. Does it intuitively sound like a good idea for the person? Are they open to it? If so, the only way to know if to try it out. Also important to address any underlying trauma / addiction patterns. READ MORE
Can chronic daily headaches be cured?
You can find palliation / symptom relief from many therapeutics. However, cure is a different thing entirely. In naturopathic medicine, one of the guiding principles for healing is removing obstacles to cure, and treating the root cause of the health issue. If nothing changes, they headaches may not be going anywhere... May be something for you to sit with and explore further. READ MORE
Anemic from low iron?
Look for a naturopathic doctor. They practice this exact kind of medicine you are intuitively looking for. An ND will help identify not only deficiencies, but underlying causes for these deficiencies (there are many), and have the highest level of education when it comes to supplementation. They typically have much more compassionate and respectful bedside manners as well. READ MORE
Can you live a long life with anemia?
There are many people with anemia that live long lives. Learning how to take care of your body is an important piece here. And, addressing the root cause as to why the anemia is there in the first place, and treating that. Doing this with a supportive and knowledgeable health care team will set you up for success. *I highly recommend having a naturopathic doctor on board. READ MORE
Can you ingest certain essential oils?
I do not recommend it. Many are toxic to nerves, liver and kidneys. Cinnamon essential oil is very toxic to the liver, when taken internally. There are a few that are used therapeutically internally, but I do not suggest doing that without the guidance of a trained and certified health care provider, like a naturopathic physician. Stick with aromatherapy and topical (mixed with a carrier oil). If you want internal herbal medicine, make yourself some herbal tea and eat your vegetables (arguably herbal medicine too, right?) READ MORE
Is it safe to have teas and herbs during pregnancy?
Not really. As spices and herbs in food - yes. As a tea or supplement, use with caution. There are few that are safe - raspberry leaf, ginger root, peppermint are a few of those. READ MORE
What essential oils can be safely added to foods?
No. I am not a fan. Essential oils are the strongest herbal medicine form there is. They also risk being toxic to the nerves, brain, liver, kidneys, with internal consumption. Too many untrained health professionals give these recommendations with little knowledge of physiology and biochemistry, and it comes with moderately high risk taking health advice from folks like that. Stick to fresh herbs and spices. There are more medical constituents in these forms as well, so you are getting a more broad spectrum of plant medicine. READ MORE
What natural remedy can I give my child for stomach pain?
Check in with him to see what is going on in his life. Many child, who are stressed or dealing with something emotionally, will have stomachaches and pains. I guess that natural remedy would be called - presence, curiosity and compassion. Heals all. READ MORE
Where can you buy high-quality herbs?
Look for companies that do third party testing of their products. That's a good place to start. READ MORE
Should a 15 year old be allowed to have medical cannabis? (Canadian)
I am just not sure cannabis should be your sole focus. What other simple and foundational measures for self care and health are being overlooked by focusing on these higher interventions? Ex. vitamin deficiencies, hormone imbalance, eating non-foods that are unfortuantely sold as foods in the grocery stores, too much screen time, not enough boundaries with social media, unprocessed grief and stress, situational symptoms of anxiety & depression (like a pandemic). I am not saying cannabis would not help, but it is being treated just the same as your Rx med, whereas the other approaches would address more of your whole being. Can you find a trained professional you would be willing to work with, that you trust and feel respected by? Do not try to medicate on your own. READ MORE
Can I get better without antidepressants?
Possibly. It just depends on other support you are bringing in - counseling, being connected to community, gut healing, addressing nutrient deficiencies, homeopathy, major lifestyle shifts, addressing underlying trauma and addictions... there are possibilities, AND I do not recommend doing it alone. Create your care team - counselor, naturopathic doc, physical trainer, etc. READ MORE
Does acupuncture cure food allergies?
I would have to say, no, BUT with a "it depends." If you have celiac disease, then absolutely no. READ MORE
Concerned about my friend?
He needs to see another doctor and get a second opinion. He needs further work-up - physical exam, history taking and testing. Also reconsidering if that medication is part of the problem. Check for side effects and drug interactions. If this was my friend, I would recommend getting a naturopathic doctor on board, as part of their health team. READ MORE
Sore throat?
Sorry to hear about your sore throat. Unfortunately, I am unable to give specific health advice on here. If you would like to get a more clear answer, it would be best schedule a consultation with me, or schedule an appointment with your primary doc. Best of luck to you. It sounds like you are tending to your health well. READ MORE
Does acupuncture help bronchitis?
It can. It depends on the cause, and if obstacles to cure have been removed. READ MORE
