Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Erika N. Wandel, who serves patients throughout the State of Connecticut.

Dr. Erika Wandel is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist and a Fellowship trained Glaucoma Specialist with The Eye Care Group in Connecticut. 

In continuing practice since 1974, The Eye Care Group is the longest established ophthalmic office in the area. It is a group of 18 ophthalmologists, each possessing a unique area of expertise. The doctors cover all the ophthalmic subspecialties, enjoy clinical appointments at Yale University, and participate in clinical research trials.  As a result, they are fully qualified to handle all eye care needs. 

Striving for excellence and compassion in eye care, Dr. Wandel also serves as an Attending physician at Yale New Haven Hospital alongside her clinical role at The Eye Care Group. Pertaining to her educational background, she graduated from the University of Chicago with honors. She attended medical school at New York Medical College, followed by an internship at Greenwich Hospital, where she received awards for her compassionate care. She then completed her residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, followed by a Glaucoma Fellowship at Mt. Sinai Hospital. She is Board-Certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

A member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Glaucoma Society, Dr. Wandel has delivered academic lectures at local meetings and international conferences. She has also done humanitarian work in Brussels and Eastern Europe with the United Nations in addition to helping establish health care services in underserved areas of Chicago. She enjoys providing services pertaining to comprehensive Ophthalmology, as well as cataract surgery, and excels in the management of glaucoma, providing topical treatment, laser therapy, and a wide range of surgical options. Having grown up with her father’s Glaucoma practice as an extension of their home, she has a unique perspective on the value of long-term relationships with her patients based on compassionate, attentive, personalized care.

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery. 

Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Wandel enjoys spending time with her husband, a primary medicine doctor, her two small children, and her two older stepchildren. She loves biking, reading, and amateur rowing at a local rowing club.
