  • How can I tell if my daughter has speech issues?

We look for the R sound to emerge between the ages of 5-7. If at 6 there is no evidence that it's emerging at least in some contexts, it's a good idea to get some speech therapy. READ MORE

  • Should I be worried about my stutter?

Worry tends not to help anything, so I would advise you not to worry (even though I understand that is not always possible!). If you are concerned about your speech, I would seek a speech therapist who specializes in adult stuttering. READ MORE

  • What causes children to have a delayed speech?

There are hundreds of reasons for late talking including neurological problems, developmental disorders, intellectual disabilities, motor planning difficulties, and more. A speech therapist would be able to evaluate your child and help you figure out what the problem is. READ MORE

  • How can I tell if my baby has speech problems?

Definitely seek the help of a specialist. We expect kids to say first words by about 12 months, and combine words into little sentences by the age of 2. My website has developmental norms you can reference to see what is expected at what age. https://www.zahavafriedmanspeech.com/resources READ MORE

  • My daughter has somewhat of a his when she talks. How can it be corrected?

Hello, That's a great question. No, it is not too early. Speech therapy can start in the first year of life for some kids, depending on what's going on. A frontal lisp is typical until about 4.5 years old, then it needs to be addressed. It depends what kind of distortion she has on her S sound and what other speech error patterns are there. I have some resources on my website that show the development of speech sounds, you can check that out here: https://www.zahavafriedmanspeech.com/resources-1 (click "speech sounds developmental norms.") If you are in MA or CA, I can provide a free initial phone consultation to determine if therapy might be the right path for your daughter. If you are outside of those states, I would contact a local speech therapist. Warm regards and happy new year! Zahava READ MORE
