Dr. Nichols is a board-certified psychiatrist with over 10 years of private practice experience. He is the Co-Founder & Medical Director of Child and Adolescent Programs at Next Step 2 Mental Health in Louisville, Kentucky, where he provides empathetic and compassionate care to children and adolescents.
As such, he spends countless hours working with the expert, multidisciplinary treatment team to ensure programs and treatment meet and exceed the needs of both parent and child. He is deeply involved in nearly every aspect of the Child and Adolescent Programs, helping to ensure that members are provided with comprehensive ADHD treatment that works. He specializes in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, and mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder. He can also provide family therapy.
A Louisville native, Dr. Nichols attended the University of Louisville School of Medicine, graduating with his medical degree in 2002. He completed his residency in psychiatry at University Hospital – University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and then returned to Louisville to complete a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry. During his training, he served as Chief Resident in Child Psychiatry and received numerous clinical and teaching awards, including several awards for Humanism in Medicine.
Licensed to practice medicine in several states, the doctor is board-certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting high quality patient care for the public through the initial and continuing certification of psychiatrists and neurologists.
Combining years of experience in academic medicine, teaching, and private practice with a history of successfully treating hundreds of children and teens with ADHD, Dr. Nichols brings to the table a wealth of knowledge and expertise.
An avid researcher, he has published a number of scholarly articles and presented for international conferences. He is a former full-time teaching faculty member at the University of Louisville. He has also served as the Medical Director of the Psychiatry Unit at Kosairs Children’s Hospital.
