Innovative Physician Combines Expertise in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Infectious Disease to Enhance Patient Care

Sukhjit Takhar, MD, an esteemed infectious disease physician, is the Infection Control and Antibiotic Stewardship Co-Director at Mills-Peninsula Medical Center (MPMC) in Burlingame, California. As part of Sutter Health, MPMC is a prominent 241-bed, not-for-profit medical and surgical center dedicated to delivering high-quality healthcare services in the community. 

Dr. Takhar’s impressive career spans multiple disciplines, including emergency medicine, internal medicine, and infectious disease. He obtained his Medical Degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1999, followed by rigorous training at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, where he completed his residencies in internal medicine and emergency medicine and a fellowship in infectious disease. Additionally, Dr. Takhar enhanced his expertise with a Master’s Degree in Epidemiology from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in 2013.

In his role at MPMC, Dr. Takhar is dedicated to improving patient safety and health outcomes through effective infection control practices and antibiotic stewardship. His dual role as Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Primary-MD further demonstrates his commitment to innovative healthcare solutions and improving patient access to care.

Dr. Takhar is also a Visiting Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UCSF Fresno, where his contributions to medical education have been recognized through various awards. Notably, the UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program honored him as the “Outstanding Attending Teacher” in 2008. He received multiple accolades from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 2016 and 2017, including “Emergency Medicine Physician of the Year,” “Emergency Medicine Attending Physician of the Year,” and “Emergency Medicine Mentor of the Year.”

With board certifications in emergency medicine, internal medicine, and infectious disease, Dr. Takhar embodies a comprehensive approach to patient care that integrates his diverse expertise. His leadership at MPMC is instrumental in addressing the challenges of today’s healthcare landscape, particularly in managing infectious diseases and ensuring the responsible use of antibiotics.
