Get to know Infectious Disease expert Dr. Anthea Nwandu, who serves patients in Columbia, Maryland.

A board-certified internist, HIV specialist, medical educator and global health physician, Dr. Nwandu has over 25  years of experience in active clinical practice both in the United States and Nigeria. She is also currently affiliated with Summit Medical Group in Columbia, Maryland.

Summit Medical Group (SMG) is a multispecialty medical practice established in 2021 to meet the needs of patients in the greater DMV area. The practice’s goal is to provide an advanced health care delivery  practice that puts the patient first. The medical team at SMG are passionate about the inequities in health care access and have assembled a team of professionals to help bridge the gap by ensuring that psychosocial and other determinants of health are addressed at each patient visit in a patient centered home. 

Regarding her educational background, Dr. Nwandu earned her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of Nigeria College of Medicine in 1986. After relocating to the United States, she completed a residency program in Internal Medicine in 1994 ,  she earned her Master of Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2013, and was certified in instructional systems design and development by the University of Maryland Baltimore County in 2016. 

As a testament to her success, the doctor is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

She is also certified by the American Academy of HIV Medicine. 

Dr. Nwandu is currently also an Academic Hospitalist with the US Department of Veterans Affairs in Baltimore.Md and is an Adjunct AssistantClinical  Professor with the University of Maryland School of Medicine,  Department of Medicine. 

With a passion for medical education , teaching,and mentoring trainees , until 2019 she was also an attending physician and academic hospitalist within the Department of Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the University of Maryland Medical Center. There, she was responsible for leading and teaching medical teams, as well as providing direct medical care to and management of patients admitted in the hospital with HIV and other infectious diseases and comorbidities.

She continues to do this in her role as an Academic Hospitalist with the  Baltimore Veteran Affairs Medical Center that is integral to training of Internal Medicine trainees from the University of Maryland School of  Medicine. 

From 2007 to 2017, Dr. Nwandu provided medical technical leadership in the implementation of large-scale PEPFAR funded HIV prevention, care and treatment projects for University of Maryland Institute of Human Virology international program in Nigeria and other countries in Africa.. She led multidisciplinary medical teams to provide technical assistance and capacity building to comprehensive HIV/TB/PMTCT Care and treatment service delivery programs at over 200 PEPFAR supported primary, secondary, and tertiary health care facilities and academic institutions across Nigeria.

In that role , she also led the development of innovative service delivery models including maternal infant HIV clinics, adolescent specific clinics, nurse prescriber programs, integrated TB HIV care at PEPFAR funded ART clinics as well as the development and implementation of several Continuous Quality Improvement Initiatives at supported facilities to improve evidence based care and treatment service delivery to patients infected or affected by HIV. 

She also led the development of HIV specific curricula used for the training and education of various cadres of health care workers – nurses, doctors , auxiliary health care workers at pre and In service levels . 

A Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), Dr. Nwandu is also a member of the American Academy of HIV Medicine and Society of Hospital Medicine 

Infectious disease is a medical specialty dealing with the prevention, the diagnosis, and the treatment of infections. An infectious disease specialist’s practice also consists of managing nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infections.

Active in the community, Dr. Nwandu works with local churches to organize health fairs and provide health screening services and vaccinations. She works with local NGOs to provide psychosocial support for orphans and vulnerable children in Nigeria. She is also active in the feeding of homeless and indigent people through various charity organizations and churches.
