A highly-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, Dr. Bicos is affiliated with Michigan Orthopedic Surgeons. He initially started his orthopedic practice in the Indianapolis area and joined Performance Orthopedics, the premier Orthopedic Sports Medicine practice in the Oakland County area, in 2012.

Specializing in shoulder and knee surgery, he treats athletes of all ages, but one does not have to be an athlete to see him. For shoulder problems, he specializes in shoulder replacements (total and reverse shoulders), shoulder replacement alternatives (superior capsular reconstruction), shoulder fractures (including clavicle), complex shoulder instability cases (including bone block – Latarjet – procedures), and arthroscopic treatment of rotator cuff tears, biceps tendon tears, pec tendon tears, labral tears, and instability/dislocation cases. 

For knee problems, Dr. Bicos specializes in cartilage regeneration procedures (MACI, DeNovo), cartilage transplant procedures (OATS, allograft OATS), osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) fixation, meniscal repair and transplantation, patellar tracking issues (i.e. dislocations, instability), arthroscopic ligament reconstruction (ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL, multi-ligament), quadriceps and patellar tendon tears, and arthritic knee debridement procedures. He treats Achilles tendon tears, hamstring tendon tears, and all sports medicine related injuries, as well as offers a wide range of stem cell options and consultations into stem cell treatments.

In his professional experience, Dr. Bicos is the Director of the Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak & an Assistant Professor at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, where he is very active in teaching the fellows, residents, and medical students of the Orthopedic Department. He performs surgery at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak; William Beaumont Hospital, Troy; Beaumont Hospital, Taylor; and UnaSource Surgery Center.

A seasoned veteran when taking care of sports teams, he managed the Hartford Wolfpack, which is the feeder team for the New York Rangers NHL Hockey Team, and has taken care of the USA Gymnastics Men’s and Women’s National and Olympic Teams. Dr. Bicos is currently the USA Gymnastics National Team Orthopedic Physician and has traveled not only to two World Championships but was the gymnastics head physician at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. 

Having covered numerous National Gymnastics Championship events, he served as team physician for Oakland University Athletics, Rochester University Athletics and is now the team physician for the Detroit Tradesmen Rugby Team. He also actively covers many of the local high school athletic teams.

Having grown up in the suburbs of Chicago, Dr. Bicos graduated from Northwestern University with his Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering in 1995. After Northwestern, he earned his medical degree from Rush Medical College in 1999. He continued his training at Rush University Medical Center and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery with Midwest Orthopedics at Rush in 2004. He then went on to complete his sports medicine training with a fellowship at the University of Connecticut from 2004 to 2005.

Taking a personalized approach to all of his patients, the doctor is board-certified in orthopedic surgery & orthopedic sports medicine by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.

Continuing to give lectures around the country, Dr. Bicos is the current President (2019) and Board Member for the Michigan Orthopedic Society.

Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

With his cartilage interests and strong affiliation with USA Gymnastics, Dr. Bicos was named one of the Top 10 Sports Surgeons in 2012 by Sports Illustrated. He has also earned various other awards, such as the Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018), Patients’ Choice Award (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018), On-Time Doctor Award (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018), and Compassionate Doctor Award – 5 Year Honoree (2018).
