Dr. Shams earned his medical degree and then continued his education by internal medicine residency and fellowship in cardiovascular diseases at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans, LA. He obtained further training in cardiac electrophysiology at the University of Maryland, where he specialized in the management of heart arrhythmia. With over thirteen years of experience in his field, Dr. Shams is at the forefront of his challenging field. Dr. Shams stays current in his field by maintaining professional memberships in prestigious medical organizations. He is an expert in pacemaker and defibrillation implantation and management, and is committed to community education and clinical research. Dr. Shams has presented at both national and regional conferences, which allows him to contribute to furthering the field. Cardiac electrophysiologists focus on your heart’s timing, or electrical, system and on diagnosing and treating irregular heartbeats or arrhythmias. Electrophysiologists are qualified to perform special tests of your heart’s electrical system, such as an electrophysiology study or an ablation. In addition, this heart doctor can implant a pacemaker or a defibrillator, which is similar to a pacemaker but can shock your heart back into rhythm should you need it.
