Why are my mother's eyes watering 1 year after cataract surgery?
Most likely it is due to dry eyes. It is not a result of the cataract surgery. She can try artificial tears (Refresh or Systane) that can be purchased at CVS or Walgreens. Best to purchase the kind that is in single vials as it is preservative free. Each box comes in 25 or 30 vials. See if that helps. Depending on the severity of the dry eyes that may enough or she may need to see an ophthalmologist and he/she can put in punctal plugs. Punctal plug is a very small device that is inserted into the tear duct of the an eye to prevent the drainage of fluid from the eye. This treats people with severe dry eyes. After cataract surgery
This could be a result of a common complication after cataract surgery called Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO). This is when there is a thickening of the back of the lens capsule which can cause your vision to become cloudy. This complication can develop early on during the cataract surgery recovery or sometimes even several months later. An in-office procedure using the YAG laser is used to treat PCO. A laser beam is directed at the cloudy capsule and is used to remove the hazy posterior capsule from your line of sight. This procedure is painless and takes only a few minutes. Is there a way to treat cataract without surgery?
As to date, there is no medication that can slow down the growth of or clear the clouded lens. In the early stages of the cataracts, most people can get by with improving their vision with new glasses, contacts, anti-glare sunglasses, or magnifying glass, however as the cataracts get worse over time, surgery is the only effective treatment. If left untreated, the cataract will become so clouded that it would be very difficult to see any details. Remind yourself to blink while you are on your computer or while using your cell phone to text or surf the internet. You can also go to the nearby drugstore to purchase preservative-free artificial tears. There are several brands on the market that are available without prescription. Many people try different brands to find one that they like the best. Preservative-free does not have preservatives, so try to use up each vial within one day. If you do not open the vial, it can keep for a long time. In some instances where the dry eyes are more severe, your ophthalmologist may perform a procedure where the channels to your tear duct are closed temporarily or permanently to create a reservoir of tears. Yes, most likely you are experiencing allergies. There are a few prescription eye drops that work well for these allergies. Pataday works very well, although maybe expensive depending on the insurance you have. Azelastine also works well without the heavy price. Unfortunately for both eye drops, it is not over-the-counter and must be prescribed by your ophthalmologist. You can also try Allegra (which is over-the-counter) to see if it helps. READ MORE
