Dr. Donald Allen Moses M.D.'s Expert Contributions
What is the education and training required to become a psychiatrist?
College, 4 years of medical school with an MD degree. Three to four years of psychiatric residency. It is a long haul and worth it if you want to be able to prescribe psychiatric medicine. If you are interested in dynamic psychotherapy (talk therapy), a PhD in psychology is probably a better education. Donald A. Moses, MD READ MORE
How can I get rid of my depression and anxiety?
There are too many causes fore anxiety and depression, (finances, career, family, general dissatisfaction with life) to be able to answer that question. Talking to a professional, psychiatrist, psychologist, who does not immediately prescribe medication is probably the best way to go. READ MORE

Gloomy is not an unusual feeling in winter, even for Swedes who are used to it. Being from India I would hope that your Eastern philosophy, perhaps Buddhism could be of use to overcome the urge to succumb to the feelings. READ MORE

Yes. A combination of medication and talk therapy can frequently cure a depression. READ MORE
Is there a cure for schizophrenia?
Everybody is individual, but usually it will require lifelong medication, much like type 1 diabetes. READ MORE
My mother seems to be obsessed with her health. Is this abnormal
Yes, it could be psychological in nature. But my rule has always been that you must rule out all physical causes before you can be sure it is psychological. READ MORE
I am feeling very depressed, and have not had success with medication. What can be done to help me?
You might try talk therapy. I have found that medication often does not work in lifelong depressions. But, and that is a big but, you have to find a psychotherapist, usually a psychologist who knows what to do. READ MORE
What could be the reason my mother is just not eating?
Yes. It definitely could be depression. READ MORE
My son displays sociopathic behavior. Can anything be done to help him?
Yes. Take him to a good psychotherapist, usually a psychologist, who can make connections with these youngsters. Prior to my retirement I worked with many teen-agers like your son with good results. READ MORE
My husband has severe post traumatic stress disorder. What can be done to help him cope?
PTSD is a catchall term that can refer to one or more frightening underlying emotions that have been stimulated by a severe, or more than one severe, emotional trauma, These emotions can include one or more of the following underlying feelings such as guilt, anxiety, depression. After determining just which of these, or all of these, that are unique to your husband, appropriate medication can be prescribed. However, I do not believe that medication is enough as it acts only as a palliative and not a cure. He should see a psychologist or psychiatrist, who is familiar with the problem and try to work it out with psychotherapy READ MORE
Can a diet help treat my child with ADHD?
A low sugar diet can often help, and surprisingly enough coffee helps in some people, but an accurate diagnosis of true ADHD is made, (severe anxiety or agitated depression can mimic the symptoms) judicious use of medication can do wonders for him. READ MORE

What is the best way to handle a loved one with an alcohol problem?
That sense of helplessness is all too common. You can try joining Alanon (forgive the spelling) and maybe a member of AA could talk to him. You can try threats, but they generally don't work. READ MORE
Is there a difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
There is very little difference between the two degrees. It depends more on the individuals training and philosophy of treatment than the degree. READ MORE
