Dr. Heymann received his Medical Degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1965 and was trained in Clinical and conventional operative surgery at Yale-New Haven Medical Center, Albert Einstein and Lenox Hill Hospital Surgical Residencies giving him over five decades of experience in his field. After Chief Residency at Lenox Hill Hospital, he was assigned as a Major in the U.S. Army Medical Corp for three years as the Chief of General Surgery at the 196th Station Hospital servicing NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers in Europe(SHAPE)(1970-1973).Surgical experience there included most major general surgery and pediatric surgery and coverage of thoracic,urologic , orthopedic, obstetrics and gynecology in the emergency room and other subspecialties as needed.After Honorable Discharge, he initiated Private practice and administrative responsibilities as Assistant to the Chief of Surgery which involved overseeing the new Residency Teaching program which also included teaching of newly developed Stapling techniques and Microsurgery.. Dr. Heymann is certified by the American Board of Surgery , a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons,the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons(SAGES) , American Hernia Society and others. Dr. Heymann continued private practice of Surgery without interruption ,and practices focusing on individual patient’s problems, and is affiliated with Northwell Lenox Hill Hospital. He is available to patients and physicians for consultation and Surgery and to Surgeons in other specialties for Teamwork and assistance. He holds an expertise in both modern “Minimally Invasive “Advanced laparoscopic Surgery, traditional open surgery , Reoperative surgery, and hernia surgery. In the early 1980’s,He adopted newly evolving techniques to improve hernia surgery including modern methods , mesh ,use of local anesthesia and same day discharge.This extensive experience facilitated early adoption of various described laparoscopic hernia surgery and pioneering of these methods locally and resultant extensive experience. Minimally invasive surgery(MIS) is performed with video technology entering the abdomen through small incisions .The laparoscope allows for microsurgical technique.As one of the pioneers in NYC ,Dr. Heymann utilized this technology to perform surgical procedures equivalent to the open operation that were included in his previous methodical armamentarium. Past publications and presentations have involved topics including pulmonary care ,appendicitis,biliary ,breast mesenteric cysts,liver abscesses . renal cancer and inguinal hernia techniques.. A Recent poster presentation at The College of American Pathologists,Las Vegas in September 2016 :Coexisting Invasive Adenocarcinoma Ex Goblet Cell carcinoid and Low Grade Mucinous Cystic Neoplasm of the Appendix. Pending Accepted Poster Presentation at SAGES , April 3-6,2019 , in Baltimore with Brian Bassiri-Tehrani,MD( Surgical Resident at Northwell Lenox Hill Hospital):Neurectomy for Abdominal Cutaneous Nerve Entrapment Syndrome. Dr. Heymann’s interests have evolved in treating abdominal wall pain,like nerve entrapment syndromes and intra-abdominal problems related to previous surgery.Reoperative surgery is required for untoward problems subsequent to previous abdominal hernia operations including persistent pain, recurrent hernia and problems with mesh. Some of these problems also occur after urgent Cesarean Sections.Intestinal obstruction occurs due to anatomic alterations and adhesions after previous surgery and intra-abdominal processes like appendicitis, diverticulitis and endometriosis is treated either laparoscopically or with open technique. Reoperative Surgery integrates extensive clinical experience,diligent individual case evaluation and strategic planning, risk analysis, including valued patient input with the objective to use the accumulated skills of open and laparoscopic surgery to maximize results in difficult diagnostic and therapeutic situations. Dr. Heymann believes that familiarity with the issues requiring Reoperative Surgery minimizes risk , maximization of surgical options and enhances results in primary surgery since one procedure does not fit all clinical and anatomic situations.The surgical remedy ought fit the specific problem.
