Educated in the United States, Dr. Cappel completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology and graduated Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Wisconsin. He earned his medical degree and graduated Alpha Omega Alpha at the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine. Following his internship year at the Medical College of Wisconsin, he completed his residency in dermatology at the Mayo Clinic. He then completed a fellowship in dermatopathology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Subsequent to his education, the doctor attained board certification in dermatology and dermatopathology through the American Board of Dermatology, which is a voluntary, non-profit, private, autonomous organization formed for the primary purpose of protecting the public interest by establishing and maintaining high standards of training, education, and qualifications of physicians rendering care in dermatology.
Throughout his illustrious career, he served as a staff member in the Department of Dermatology at Mayo Clinic for 9 years and was promoted to Consultant at Mayo Clinic Florida and Assistant Professor in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. He has an interest in teaching and education and was previously the Dermatology Residency Program Director at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. He then moved to Tampa, Florida for 3 years, and joined Dermatology Associates of Tampa Bay and Gulf Coast Dermatopathology Laboratory, for the continued practice of dermatology and dermatopathology.
Enjoying life-long learning, Dr. Cappel has given numerous dermatology and dermatopathology meeting presentations, both nationally and internationally. He has authored 45 peer-reviewed medical journal publications on a wide range of dermatology and dermatopathology topics, which are cited on PubMed.
