  • Is it safe to take amoxicillin if I don't need to?

It is extremely difficult to distinguish between a viral or bacterial sinonasal infection during the first 7 days. I do not recommend taking antibiotics unless your practitioner feels confident that you are likely suffering from a bacterial infection. As you noted, Amoxil will not alleviate a viral infection. At best, it won't do anything. At worst, you could have side effects of the antibiotic. Side effects of antibiotics are numerous and some of them can be quite severe. Therefore, I do not recommend simply taking them without the direction of a physician. READ MORE

  • I used cold water from my fridge in my neti pot. Will I get PSE or get nasal damage?

It is highly unlikely that you'll get a bad infection due to one rinse when not using distilled water. Get back to using distilled water for safety and remember to sanitize your Neti pot, or rinse bottle, before and after each use. READ MORE

  • What type of anesthesia is used for tonsils surgery?

Patients are put under general anesthesia. You will be completely asleep throughout the procedure. A breathing tube is inserted by the anesthesia team to temporarily place you on a ventilator since you will be under general anesthesia. READ MORE

  • Bruised lump on neck/collarbone?

Have her see an ENT specialist. It's very difficult to tell from the pictures. The first looks like a bruise. The second looks like a skin cyst. READ MORE

  • Do I have the flu?

You may have strained the muscles which lie between each rib - the intercostal muscles. It is possible to have even had a minor tear to one from vigorous coughing. READ MORE

  • Can you get a tongue ulcer?

Yes, you absolutely can get a tongue ulcer. There are many causes: traumatic - irritation from a tooth, toothpaste, food, chemical infectious - bacteria, viral, fungal. See your doctor for an evaluation of possible causes and treatments. READ MORE

  • Thyroid nodule?

I'd definitely start by having you see an ENT physician and having an ultrasound performed. A thyroid nodule should not be in continuity with your throat. This sounds more like a laryngocele. READ MORE

  • Nose cartilage inquiry?

It's unlikely that deep inspiration, like you're describing, would cause damage to the cartilage itself. That being said, there are ligaments which connect various cartilages in the nose as well as to the skin itself. These can weaken over the years which leads to changes in nasal appearance and function. Over many years, you may be accelerating some of this process. READ MORE

  • Post surgery?

Yes, you should still use your CPAP. I always tell me sleep apnea patients that they must assume, as do I, that they still have persistent sleep apnea, even after upper airway surgery, until a polysomnogram (sleep study) is done. I know of another doctor's patient who died of sleep apnea complications from NOT resuming CPAP after tonsillectomy. READ MORE

  • Is a rhinoplasty after retinal surgery safe?

There should not be any direct trauma/surgical risk to the eye. That being said, eye protection during surgery by the surgeon and anesthesiology team could put pressure on your eyes and should be discussed. Additionally, blood pressure management should be discussed with the anesthesia team with additional recommendations and guidance from your retinal specialist. READ MORE

  • What medicine to take for sinus pressure?

Without knowing: your medical history, current medications what you've tried it's difficult to make safe and specific recommendations. That being said, saline rinsing to the nose is safe. Just follow the directions on the package. Check with an ENT and allergist for evaluation, testing, and management specifics. READ MORE

  • Lost voice?

It's definitely time to have an ENT doctor look at her larynx ("voice box"). A variety of things could be present such as inflammation from the acid exposure hemorrhage into one of the vocal folds. READ MORE

  • Should I go to the ER?

If you're having trouble breathing and walking, then YES, get yourself to the ER. Wear a mask and avoid potentially exposing others until you are evaluated. READ MORE

  • I have ear ringing?

Yes, you should see an ENT doctor and an audiologist to have hearing testing. The most common reason why you'd have this is due to hearing loss. READ MORE

  • Neck artery?

It's not uncommon to have some vessel asymmetry in the neck. Just to be sure, have an ENT doctor check your neck to reassure you that that is all this is. READ MORE

  • Shortness of breath

That sounds quite concerning. You definitely need to see a physician. This may require a pulmonologist and otolaryngolgist. READ MORE

  • I have terrible ear pain. Could this be an infection?

There are many reasons why someone may have ear pain: Ear issues - ear infection, trauma, foreign body, excessive wax (rare cause) Jaw joint pain even throat sources of pain and along the tonsil can radiate pain deep into the ear. READ MORE

  • Can swimmer's ears cause deafness?

A swimmer's ear can cause a loss of hearing if the canal becomes swollen shut or filled with debris from the infection. This hearing loss will completely recover once this infection resolves. In very rare circumstances, the infection, if untreated or if a severely immunocompromised state is present, could progress deeper into the skull. At this point, permanent hearing loss could result. READ MORE

  • Lung issue?

Your asthma is a possibility in this situation, but I'd strongly consider nocturnal reflux (from your stomach) as a contributing factor. See your pulmonologist first and mention this as a possibility. In the meantime, try elevating the head of your bed and make sure you don't eat (or drink much) for at least a couple hours before lying down at night (that includes lying down on the couch etc). • Parotid seroma keeps coming back after draining

This can be a very frustrating issue for both the patient and surgeon. It is typically self-limiting. First line therapy is recurrent aspiration of the fluid collection. The pocket typically gets smaller and scars itself off with time. Occasionally, a drain will be placed to help prevent the need for repeated visits and aspirations, but isn't without its own drawbacks. If this occurs long-term, Botox (or similar agents) may be useful. Fortunately, I've never had it persist long enough to require such intervention. I have used Botox for patients whom I've seen in consultation for Frey's syndrome (sweating over this area while eating) which can be a consequence of parotid surgery. READ MORE
