First documented use of pulsatile flow (PF) cardiopulmonary bypass in patients produced by Intra-aortic Baloon Pump (IABP), VA Hospital, Denver, CO. 1974. The use of PF in patients having open heart surgery was published in Surgery, Vol. 77, pp 34-44, 1975. The study demonstrated improvement of myocardial and other vital organ functions and metabolism with a simple method of PF (IABP) during clinical cardiopulmonary bypass.
In canine homographed mitral valve replacement treated with imunosuppression (Imuran) resulted in complication of excessive subacute bacterial endocarditis. Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, 1963.
At the Mayo Clinic, hydrogenperoxide and catylase enzyme used to improve oxygenation in desaturated sheep. The results demonstrated improvement of oxygenation but was complicated by marked excessive water load in the animal. 1963.
