Get to know General Surgeon Dr. Matthew R. Bagan, who serves patients in Port Charlotte, Florida.

Dr. Bagan is a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in general surgery, including surgery of the breast and abdomen, laparoscopic procedures, upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, and capsule “pill cam” endoscopy. 

Practicing at 21st Century Oncology, he is dedicated to the health and well-being of every patient and takes pride in providing the highest quality surgical care. He excels at providing personalized attention to his patients and assisting them cope with all aspects of their surgery.

In the early days of his academic career, Dr. Bagan graduated with his Bachelor of Arts degree from Hobart College in 1989. He then went on to earn his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Des Moines University in 1994.

Furthering his training, he performed his internship at Delaware Valley Medical Center in 1995. Years later, he completed his residency at Peninsula Hospital in 1998 and his residency in general surgery at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in 2000.

Committed to improving patients’ quality of life, the doctor is board-certified through the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery (AOBS). The AOBS is an organization that provides board certification to qualified Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine who specialize in the use of surgery to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

In direct affiliation with his industry, Dr. Bagan is an active member of the American Osteopathic Association and the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons.

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and pancreatic disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care. 

In honor of his clinical expertise, Dr. Bagan is the recipient of Patients’ Choice Award (2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2020), Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2015, 2017, 2018, 2020), and On-Time Doctor Award (2020).
