Get to know Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Peter M. Ihle, who serves patients in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

As an orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Ihle has had a fair amount of experience with ligament repairs, total knee replacements, total hip replacements, micro laminectomies, discectomies, as well as spinal fusions. He practiced general orthopedics with an interest in shoulder and knee reconstruction and spine.Due to the fact that Dr. Ihle had undergone multiple rotator cuff surgeries in the 1990’s, he had to retire from active practice due to pain, muscle spasms and subsequent poor function of his shoulders.

Being unable to provide clinical care, Dr. Ihle began a consulting business and, over the past 15 years, he has done independent medical examinations for personal injury cases, workman’s’ compensation cases, and medical malpractice cases. He has performed approximately 800-1000 independent medical record exams and medical record reviews, serving as both plaintiff and defense.

Dr. Ihle received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine & Public Health in Madison, Wisconsin. He then went on to complete a 1 year rotating internship at mercy hospital in Cedar Rapids Iowa. This was followed by one-year general surgery at Marshfield Clinic in Marshfield, Wisconsin, followed by a three-month hand fellowship with Dr. Joseph Posch in Detroit, Michigan. Thereafter, Dr. Ihle went on to complete his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Wisconsin from 1969-1972.

The same year he completed his residency, Dr. Ihle practiced medicine for two years as a Lt. Commander in the United States Navy. After an honorable discharge from the military in 1974, he returned to Eau Claire, Wisconsin and practiced as a Board Certified Orthopedist with his father and brother. Their group was called Ihle Orthopedic Clinic and grew from three doctors to seven orthopedic surgeons.

Throughout his line of work, Dr. Ihle held professional memberships with several organizations, including the State Medical Society, the Tri County Medical Society, the American College of Surgeons, the Clinical Orthopaedic Society, the Wisconsin Surgical Society, the Wisconsin Orthopaedic Society, and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

Dr. Ihle was board-certified in Orthopaedic Surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) in 1973. Founded in 1934 as a private, voluntary, nonprofit, autonomous organization, the ABOS exists to serve the best interest of the public and the medical profession by establishing educational standards for orthopaedic residents and by evaluating the initial and continuing qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons. Their mission is to ensure safe, ethical, and effective practice of orthopaedic surgery.
