Is it safe to have a cavity filled while pregnant?
You probably should get a medical consult with your OB/GYN. Typically, unless your treatment is an emergency- where you have an abscess or are in pain, then treatment is down. I do not treat pregnant patients for any dental procedures other than cleanings. Also- we don’t do X-rays either. If your cavity is not so big and can wait, you may want to defer treatment. Also- keep in mind that once the baby comes and you plan on nursing- you may need to pump and dump if you intend on having dental treatment as the local anesthetic can be traced in your breast milk. Should you forego getting the filling done during your pregnancy, your dentist should use Carbocaine without epinephrine. That is the most benign local anesthetic given. READ MORE
