Elizabeth Gaughan, MD, is a medical oncologist and clinical investigator, specializing in the management of melanoma, non-melanoma skin cancer, cancer immunotherapy and toxicity of checkpoint inhibitors. Dr. Gaughan is the lead of the Melanoma Multidisciplinary Clinical Team as well as the Melanoma Translational and Clinical Research teams for the University of Virginia Comprehensive Cancer Center in Charlottesville, Va. These teams bring together experts in dermatology, surgery, radiation, medical oncology and research to identify effective, customized treatments for patients with advanced skin cancer in a compassionate and supportive setting. Dr. Gaughan also serves on the steering committee of the UVA Multidisciplinary Brain Metastasis Program. Dr. Gaughan received several honors for her work including the UVA Health Department of Medicine Clinical Excellence Award in 2017 and the UVA School of Medicine Dean’s award for clinical excellence in 2018.
She is a native of Northern Virginia and earned her undergraduate degree with honors from the University of Notre Dame. She also completed her medical education with honors at Georgetown University School of Medicine, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Dr. Gaughan completed her post-graduate medical training at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. She joined the University of Virginia medical faculty in 2012 and primarily practices at the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center, Charlottesville, Virginia.
