A fellowship-trained emergency physician, Dr. Shih assesses patients who seek medical attention at any time of day or night. He has recently taken over the leadership of the newly created Division of Emergency Medicine at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University, where he is a Professor of Integrated Medical Science in the Department of Integrated Medical Science. He previously served as the Emergency Medicine Program Director at Morristown Medical Center for 19 years.
Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine is one of the most recent LCME accredited medical schools in the United States. The college was launched in 2010, when it became the 134th allopathic medical school in North America. Their physicians and scientists team up to develop innovative approaches to treat and prevent disease in Palm Beach County and throughout the world. They focus their work on both understanding basic biological mechanisms and cultivating new strategies to combat disease.
Born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware, Dr. Shih completed a 5-year accelerated medical-premedical program at Pennsylvania State University-Thomas Jefferson Medical School in 1988. He then went on to complete a surgical internship at the University of Maryland, an residency in emergency medicine at the Medical Center of Delaware, and a fellowship in Medical Toxicology at the New York Poison Center, Bellevue-NYU Medical Center.
Emergency medicine, also known as accident and emergency medicine, is the medical specialty concerned with the care of illnesses or injuries requiring immediate medical attention. An emergency physician works in an emergency department to care for acutely ill or injured patients on an unscheduled basis.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Shih has received a number of teaching awards, including the American College of Emergency Physicians National Faculty Teaching Award, and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine Educator of The Year Award. He has authored over 50 articles in peer reviewed journals, over 20 book chapters and has been an editor in 3 medical books.
