Dr. O’Hair joined Boulder Heart as Cardiovascular Surgery Program Chair in 2019. With a unique combination of skills and more than 20 years of experience, he works effectively in both the operating room and the cardiac catheterization lab. This allows him to advise patients from a perspective that can be matched by few physicians.
At Boulder Heart, Dr. O’Hair performs a range of cardiovascular surgeries, including complex open-heart surgery and robotic-assisted mitral valve repair. He is one of the nation’s leading experts in robotic-assisted mitral valve repair, and Colorado’s most experienced surgeon with this minimally invasive procedure performed with the da Vinci® Xi™ Surgical System. He has also been selected as a global proctor for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), meaning he teaches other cardiologists to perform this innovative procedure.
Prior to joining Boulder Community Health, Dr. O’Hair successfully created one of the largest, high-performing heart valve programs in the United States and was active in clinical trials. He served as a medical community leader in Wisconsin for two decades, performing the first robotic-assisted mitral valve repair, TAVR, and mitral valve replacement (TMVR) procedures in the state.
With a broad educational background, Dr. O’Hair received his medical degree from Medical College of Wisconsin, where he also completed his residency and a research fellowship in general surgery. He then went on to complete an additional fellowship in transplantation as well as a residency in cardiothoracic surgery at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.
Specializing in surgical procedures, the doctor is board-certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.
Furthermore, he is board-certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS). The ABTS serves the public by promoting excellence in practice through rigorous evaluation and examination, providing leadership in education, and ensuring high standards for professionalism, lifelong learning, and certification.
