  • What steps are needed to treat my razor bumps?

The hairs will eventually break through the skin surface if allowed to grow out. Once grown out, switching to an electric trimming device (i.e., Manscape) might alleviate the problem as well.  Stephen Schleicher, MD READ MORE

  • Blue spots on arm?

Black and blue spots are usually due to some sort of injury. If the pain and spots persist, definitely visit a local doctor for evaluation.  Stephen Schleicher, MD READ MORE

  • Tan that really doesn't want to go away?

Hi, I agree; usually a tan fades after two weeks or so. Persistent coloration may be the result of a minor yeast infection affecting the top layer of skin; sunlight often brings out this condition. I recommend visiting a local dermatologist to be evaluated. If a superficial yeast, the condition can be corrected by medications and the color should return to normal.  Stephen Schleicher, MD READ MORE

  • Cyst on scalp?

Hello, Scalp cysts are very common and usually not serious. If yours is draining or squeaking, you may desire to have it removed. This can be easily accomplished in a dermatologist's office.  Stephen Schleicher, MD READ MORE

  • Red rash on penis foreskin containing little dots inside the rash?

Try Lotrimin cream for a few days. If rash persists, best to visit your local dermatologist.  Steve Schleicher, MD READ MORE

  • Red spots?

Could be a contact dermatitis (i.e., poison ivy). If itchy, apply hydrocortisone cream. If very itchy and spreading, visit your local dermatologist.  Stephen Schleicher, MD READ MORE

  • Embarrassing question?

Not embarrassing and a somewhat common problem. Unfortunately, over-the-counter remedies will probably not have any effect, so best to see a local dermatologist if you desire removal.   Steve Schleicher, MD READ MORE

  • Hemangioma?

Hi,  Hemangiomas are benign, but somewhat unsightly and can certainly bleed if traumatized. A somewhat related condition is called "pyogenic granuloma. These lesions (which also contain blood vessels) rapidly form and certainly can bleed, with or without trauma. They may recur if superficially removed. So, if your skin lesion has returned and is enlarging, best to have it checked by your dermatologist.  Stephen Schleicher, MD READ MORE

  • Unexplained itching?

Hi,  Itching can be caused by a number of factors including allergies. If itching persists despite taking Claritn, Zyrtec, or Allegra, a visit to your dermatologist is prudent. Btw: Accutane has no effect on blood sugar, and your liver should be fine.  Steve Schleicher, MD READ MORE

  • What do I do?

Photo a bit blurry. Could well be an infected hair follicle that might require a short course of an oral and/or topical antibiotic. Best to visit your doctor for further advice and perhaps a prescription.  Stephen Schleicher, MD READ MORE

  • Peeling skin on penis?

If your skin condition does not improve with 1% hydrocortisone cream, a visit to your doctor is the best choice.  Stephen Schleicher, MD READ MORE

  • What causes scaly skin?

Scaly skin can be due to loss of moisture within the top layer of skin or by certain diseases such as psoriasis, which produce an excess of skin cells that end up coating the skin surface leading to scales.  Stephen Schleicher, MD READ MORE

  • How long does it take the top layer of skin to grow back?

The top layer of skin usually grows back within 28 days.  Steve Schleicher, MD READ MORE

  • Poison Oak on hands?

Poison ivy or poison oak results from contact with the plant or contact with a pet who has the plant's resin on its skin. One cannot catch poison ivy or oak from another person. I have no idea what zanfei is. Severe poison ivy might require treatment by your doctor.  Steve Schleicher READ MORE

  • Does peeled skin go back to normal?

Most skin peeling is the result of either dryness or irritation from harsh soaps. Use of a moisturizer might help normalize your skin. If not, your dermatologist should be able to help.  Steve Schleicher, MD READ MORE

  • What is the best acne treatment?

Good question. Treatment of acne depends in large measure on the severity of your condition. Treatments available without prescription include benzoyl peroxide and Differin gel. If these are not helping, the next step would be a visit to your dermatologist since acne is unsightly and, if severe, can leave scars.  Steve Schleicher READ MORE

  • My bf has a skin infection by his groin?

Skin infections often are caused by germs entering into hair follicles. Sometimes minor trauma can trigger an infection. By the looks of this one, he definitely needs medical consultation.   Steve Schleicher READ MORE

  • How does a dermatologist treat blackheads?

Our esthetician removes blackheads using an instrument called a comedone extractor (these can be purchased on-line). Certain medications, such as Retin-A and Differin, are used topically to prevent blackheads from forming. Differin is now available without a prescription.  Steve Schleicher, MD READ MORE

  • Does apple cider vinegar kill fungus on your scalp?

Simple answer: no. If your scalp has scales, this is most probably a condition called seborrheic dermatitis, which often improves with anti-dandruff shampoos.  Steve Schleicher READ MORE

  • Thick nail?

Thick nails are often caused by fungal infection. Your local dermatologist can perform a simple test to determine if this is indeed the cause of your nail problem.   Steve Schleicher READ MORE
