Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to diagnosing, preventing, and treating mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behavior, cognition, and perceptions. Psychiatrists are medical doctors, unlike psychologists, and must evaluate patients to determine whether their symptoms are the result of a physical illness, a combination of physical and mental ailments, or strictly psychiatric. They are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems. Dr. Kim works to stabilize symptoms and maximize function for patients with mental health issues. He utilizes a holistic approach to psychiatry, integrating practices such as group singing and group guided meditation.
In his spare time, Dr. Kim enjoys diverse physical activities, as well as singing. An avid reader, he has continued extensive study after formal training, in paradigm exploration, now able to apply integral paradigm in his practice. As part of community activities, he started two book clubs – one founded in Korea and the other founded in Lincoln. To help him stay centered, Dr. Kim attends weekly Zen meditation group meetings.
