Dr. Sominsky is a board-certified hematologist-oncologist in practice at Hematology Oncology Associates of Brooklyn. A 1995 graduate of the Kursk State Medical University in Kursk, Russia, Dr. Sominsky relocated to the United States for training. She completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at Maimonides Medical Center from 1999 to 2002, followed by her fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at the same educational venue from 2004 to 2007. 

Thereafter, she became board-certified in hematology and medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist, like Dr. Sominsky, is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of blood diseases and cancers such as iron-deficiency anemia, hemophilia, sickle-cell disease, leukemia, and lymphoma.
