Get to know General & Vascular Surgeon Dr. David W. Ranson, who serves patients in South Charleston, West Virginia.

Dr. Ranson is currently serving patients at his private practice in South Charleston, West Virginia. He is recognized as the area’s foremost leader in vascular and general surgery. He and his team go above and beyond to make sure patients are taken care of and treated with the utmost respect and professionalism.

Dr. Ranson also practices at Thomas Memorial Hospital, Charleston Area Medical Center, and Boone Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Ranson is board-certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1937 to provide board certification to individuals who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge in the field of surgery. Board certification by the ABS is a voluntary process that demonstrates a surgeon’s commitment to professionalism, lifelong learning, and quality patient care.

Dr. Ranson graduated from West Virginia University School of Medicine in 1981 and completed a five-year surgical residency at the West Virginia University (WVU) School of Medicine – Charleston Division at Charleston Area Medical Center. He has additional training in plastic surgery and burn care.

Dr. Ranson is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at the WVU School of Medicine – Charleston Division. He is also the Cancer Liaison Physician for the American College of Surgeons, as well as the Director of the Breast Center of Thomas Health Care Systems.

Dr. Ranson is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS). The ASBrS – the primary leadership organization for general surgeons who treat patients with breast disease – is committed to continually improving the practice of breast surgery by serving as an advocate for surgeons who seek excellence in the care of breast patients. This mission is accomplished by providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and by promoting education, research, and the development of advanced surgical techniques.

Dr. Ranson is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). FACS is a post-nominal title used to indicate that the surgeon’s education and training, professional qualifications, surgical competence, and ethical conduct have passed a rigorous evaluation, and have been found to be consistent with the high standards established and demanded by said College.

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. Vascular surgery is a surgical subspecialty in which diseases of the vascular system (arteries, veins, and lymphatic circulation) are managed by medical therapy, minimally-invasive catheter procedures, and surgical reconstruction. Dr. Ranson is an expert in these types of surgical specialties.

Dr. Ranson is a native to West Virginia – having been born, raised, and educated in the mountain state.
