Delivering Cutting-Edge Eyecare and Eyewear Solutions While Championing Global Access to Vision Care

Dr. Fiona Kolia, a dedicated and innovative optometrist, is making waves in the field of eyecare through her private practice, Astoria Vision. Located in McAllen, Texas, Dr. Kolia is passionate about providing personalized care with the latest advancements in technology and fashion, catering especially to patients with complex eyecare histories. Her office has been recognized as one of America’s Finest Optical Retailers in the U.S. and Canada by Invision Magazine.

Dr. Kolia’s journey in optometry began in her native South Africa under apartheid, where she was among the first graduates of color in her program. In 1987, a fellowship from the College of Optometry led her to the University of Houston, where she later completed her Master’s Degree in Physiological Optics alongside her Optometry Degree.

With a rich academic background, Dr. Kolia has also contributed to the field as an educator, teaching at the University of Durban Westville and serving as a clinical supervisor for optometry students at the University of Houston. Her extensive experience, which includes working in hospitals across South Africa and establishing a day clinic for eye care, allows Dr. Kolia to approach her practice with a unique global perspective. This breadth of experience informs her commitment to providing exceptional care to her patients in McAllen.

Dr. Kolia is not only devoted to her patients locally but is also dedicated to global initiatives aimed at improving access to eyecare. Through her involvement with Optometry Giving Sight, a global fundraising initiative, she actively raises awareness and funds to support individuals who are blind due to lack of basic eyecare. Her office participates in a monthly donation program to contribute to this vital cause.

In a groundbreaking accomplishment, Dr. Kolia became the first optometrist in the United States to participate in the launch of the OGS initiative in Durban, South Africa. Her firsthand experience witnessing the impact of these efforts reinforced her commitment: “I attended a local school where children were examined by ICEE and saw what a great impact this contribution will have on the lives of the children. There is such a need for refraction work and knowing I have somehow contributed by participating in Optometry Giving Sight’s World Sight Day Challenge, it is a full circle in my life and is very rewarding.”

Dr. Fiona Kolia’s dedication to her patients and her commitment to enhancing global access to eyecare exemplify the true spirit of optometry.
