Mr. Ahmed El-Bershawi, MD's Expert Contributions
  • When is a person recommended to take sleeping tablets?

Your father has to see a sleep specialist so they can examine your father and diagnose appropriately. If indeed he has a sleep disorder that can be treated, then we need to treat it instead of prescribing a sleep aide, which will act as a bandaid solution. However, there are some patients that do benefit from a sleep aide, if they don't have a treatable sleep disorder or if they need a short-term treatment for insomnia related to stress. I would not recommend any long-term treatment with a sleep aide without a proper evaluation by a sleep specialist. READ MORE

  • Sleep apnea

It is not only about getting a CPAP, but rather about adjusting pressure and making sure the patient is compliant. The best way is to get a split study and CPAP sooner than later. READ MORE

  • sleep

A sleep expert has to find out why you can't sleep and treat that instead of just using a sleep aid. If a sleep aid is needed, we need to know what the underlying sleep issue is so the appropriate sleep aid is prescribed. GHADA ALY READ MORE

  • Is it considered safe to be on sleep medicines for over eight months?

I highly recommend to follow closely with a sleep doctor. When long-term medications are needed, they should be monitored carefully so there are minimal side effects. READ MORE

  • My BP medicine is causing me to sleep too much. What should I do?

I would recommend taking your medication 2 hours prior to bedtime. READ MORE

  • Is there a connection between lack of sleep and constipation?

Sleep deprivation can cause disruption to many body systems. READ MORE

  • How can I manage sleep apnea for my mother who is 70 years old?

The fundamental treatment for sleep apnea is Continous Positive Air Pressure (CPAP). However, if that is not tolerated, then the following is recommended: 1. Weight loss (BMI less than 29) 2. Treating nasal congestion and allergies aggressively 3. Treating GERD and heart burn aggressively 4. Positional therapy; sleeping on side 5. Evaluating and treating anemia and thyroid disease. Ultimately, my recommendation is to see a sleep specialist who can clinically assess your mother's condition and treat appropriatley. Thanks, Ahmed El-Bershawi, MD READ MORE

  • Can inadequate sleep cause physical changes in the brain?

Insomnia is hard to treat. From what I gather, you have sleep onset and sleep maintenance insomnia. I would highly recommend a visit with a sleep specialist to be able to have a detailed history to properly diagnose and treat. Ghada Aly READ MORE

  • I am traveling next week to a foreign country. Is Zolfresh safe for regulating my sleep cycle?

Zolfresh is prescribed for people with sleep problems. The brand name of Zolfresh in the U.S. is Ambien. I would not recommend receiving advice on medications via an online forum and I highly recommend for you to see a sleep specialist to ensure you are receiving sound medical advice based on your health history/need. • Is yoga helpful in treating sleep disorder?

Any form of exercise significantly improves sleep for those who suffer from chronic insomnia. A recent study showed only study that exercise reduced the time it took to fall asleep and increased the length of sleep compared to a night in which no exercise was done. Although I would check with a sleep specialist to find out the cause of your insomnia, trying yoga or any form of relaxing exercises should help the quality of your sleep. READ MORE

  • Shortness of breath

I would recommend that you consult with a pulmonary specialist to discuss why you are having these symptoms and possibly do a Pulmonary Function Test, which can measure how well your lungs work. Ghada Aly READ MORE

  • Mask leaks

Less than 5 apneas an hour is considered normal, but having a mask leak does make its use less effective. Proper mask adjustment is imperative to reach full benefit. It is likely the apenas could come to zero if the leak is eliminated. Please consult with a sleep specialist to assess your machine, and replace it if it is found to be faulty. Ghada Aly Chief Operating Officer READ MORE

  • Mouth guards

It really depends on what is causing the sleep issue. I recommend consulting with a sleep specialist to determine best treatment for your particular case. A CPAP machine is continuous positive airway pressure therapy which is supposed to help a person who has obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) breathe more easily during sleep. A mouthguard could be beneficial for those who unconsciously grind and/or clench their jaw while they sleep. Ghada Aly Chief Operating Officer READ MORE
