Dr. Austin is an experienced internist who was invited in 2014 to join the International Consortium on Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a global group of experts. Their collaboration resulted in the 2017 publication of a special issue of American Journal of Medical Genetics containing EDS re-classification and management guidelines. EDS is a disease of collagen, making joints, ligaments, and cartilage too flexible, which leads to early joint degeneration, poor muscle conditioning, poor wound healing, neurological symptoms, and vascular or organ ruptures.
Dr. Austin also serves as the owner and founder of Claudiu Austin, MD, LLC, in Silver Spring, Maryland, since 2019, a private practice dedicated to Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes, rare diseases and mystery diagnoses. He diagnoses and manages poorly understood conditions as hypermobile EDS, craniocervical instability, PANDAS, MCAS, POTS.
Dr. Austin received an undergraduate degree in biology and chemistry, followed by a Doctor of Medicine at Iuliu Hațieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. He subsequently received in 2004 a Master of Public Health in Health Administration and Social Medicine at the Western University of Arad in Romania. He started an Internal Medicine internship in 2006 and then completed a residency in Internal Medicine in Washington, D.C., at Providence Hospital affiliated with George Washington University in 2009. Dr. Austin is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He speaks several languages, including English, Hungarian, Romanian, Spanish, and French.
Dr. Austin began his medical career as a resident physician at Providence Hospital. Three years later, he became an internal medicine physician at Capitol Cardiology Associates and internal medicine attending at Southern Maryland Hospital between 2009 and 2010. Dr. Austin also served in several other roles, including as attending physician at Prince George's Hospital Center's Hospitalist Management Group, and as a hospitalist physician at several other medical facilities.
He joined Sinai Hospital of Baltimore as hospitalist in 2019. He also began chairing the Acute Care MDC committee in 2021 and has been a medical executive committee member since 2023. In addition to his clinical responsibilities identifying acute diseases and caring for patients suffering from chronic conditions, Dr. Austin has been involved in teaching medical students and Internal Medicine residents. He was a teaching attending at PG Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program in Cheverly, Maryland, a Johns Hopkins Instructor In Medicine for medical students at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, then he became Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
As a respected researcher, Dr. Austin has also published several works in his area of expertise, including EDS, sepsis, and pharmacology. He has also lectured before various professional groups on these topics.
His favorite teaching topics are helping undeserved communities and socially disadvantaged groups, medication side effects and interactions, error prevention, hypermobility, and medicine as an art, rather than merely a science.
As a part of his commitments to the medical industry, Dr. Austin is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Society for Apheresis, the Ehlers-Danlos Society, and the American College of Physicians.
In recognition of his professional success, Dr. Austin was selected in 2012 and 2013 among America's Top Physicians by Consumers' Research Council of America . In 2013 he was selected in "Healthgrades Honor Roll". In 2017 he was one of the recipients of “Doctor’s Choice Awards”. In April 2018 he received 'Caregiver of the Month' Award from the Ceca Foundation in Washington, DC. On March 9, 2023 Dr. Austin was included in “Marquis Who's Who in America” and on March 25, 2023 he was selected in “Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors”. In October 2024, he was named “Baltimore Top Doctor“ by the Baltimore Magazine
