Trained in the study of blood and cancer, Dr. Scoppetuolo is a hematologist-oncologist whose clinical interests include lymphoma, lung cancer, melanoma, breast cancer, and gastrointestinal cancer.
Currently, he serves as the Medical Director of The Cancer Center at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. He also serves as the Chairman of Saint Barnabas Medical Center’s Cancer Committee, and remains affiliated with Clara Maass Medical Center and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.
The Cancer Center at Saint Barnabas Medical Center is dedicated to providing the very best in oncologic care and caring and achieving the highest level of patient satisfaction. The highly-trained board-certified physicians provide compassionate personalized treatment for every patient. They spend more time so that patients understand their illness, their treatment plan, and all the medical expertise available to fight their cancer. In conjunction with the entire cancer center, the goal is to address all aspects of cancer care including medical, psychological, and educational needs.
With a broad educational background, Dr. Scoppetuolo received his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, followed by his medical degree from the University of Health Science/The Chicago Medical School in Illinois. He completed his residency at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey and served as chief medical resident at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. He then finished his fellowship in medical oncology and hematology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, where he served as an adjunct attending on the Solid Tumor Service for 10 years.
As a testament to his success, the doctor is board-certified in internal medicine and medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
Throughout the years, Dr. Scoppetuolo has served as the chief medical officer for Barnabas Health Hospice and Palliative Care Center. He has also had numerous appointments at institutions such as Cornell University Medical School and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He is the past president of the Essex County Unit of the American Cancer Society and the past director of the Medical Oncology and Fellowship Program at United Hospital in Newark.
A member of numerous professional and civic organizations, Dr. Scoppetuolo is actively involved in the American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen Medical Advisory Board, the American Medical Association, the New Jersey Medical Society, the American Association of Clinical Cancer Centers, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer, malignant blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and blood disorders such as iron-deficiency anemia, clotting abnormalities, hemophilia, and sickle-cell disease.
For his efforts, Dr. Scoppetuolo has received many awards including the American Cancer Society President’s Award and Diamond Ball Honoree; Physician of the Year from the Center For Home Health Development and the New Jersey Hospice; and the National Hospital and Palliative Care Excellence in Team Care Award. He has also been selected as Top Doctor by NJ Monthly, NJ Magazine and Castle Connelly, as well as has published several articles in professional publications including Anticancer Research, Cancer Research Reports, and Rutgers University Press.
