Get to know Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. John Paul Kupferschmid, who serves patients in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Kupferschmid is a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon working out of Pediatric Specialists of Texas, which is a part of Methodist Hospital-San Antonio.

One of the most rewarding aspects of his job is “seeing kids two, three years later and how they have grown past their disease.” Dr. Kupferschmid stays in contact with the children and their families. He is known to go to little league games and to fill scrapbooks with letters and notes from these former patients.

Pediatric Specialists of Texas is dedicated to providing the highest level of service and care possible for patients. The practice takes a collaborative approach to diagnosing, treating, and managing patients’ special medical needs from infancy to young adulthood. Patients benefit from the pediatric subspecialty teams, including hematology/oncology, neurosurgery, congenital heart surgery and gastroenterology.

A 1982 graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Kupferschmid performed his residency in surgery at the Allegheny Health Network Medical Education Consortium in 1985. He then served his residency in thoracic surgery at the National Capital Consortium in 1987, his residency in surgery at the Allegheny Health Network Medical Education Consortium in 1990, and his fellowship in thoracic surgery at the Boston University Medical Center in 1993.

A member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the doctor is board-certified in congenital cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS). The ABTS is an American surgical organization devoted to surgery of the chest.

Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in the surgical treatment of organs inside the thorax. A pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon treats infants, children and teens with serious heart or lung conditions that require surgical procedures. These surgeons have specialized training in providing medical care for children who may be born with congenital disorders or develop problems as they become older.

Beyond Texas, Dr. Kupferschmid is making an impact for children around the world. He travels abroad regularly to perform operations. When his friend and fellow pediatric cardiologist Kirk Milhoan, M.D., started an organization called For Hearts and Souls, he quickly became involved.

Through the organization, Dr. Kupferschmid participates in programs in Mongolia, Kosovo, and Iraq. He travels abroad a couple times a year as part of a team that performs operations, while training surgeons in these regions.
