A highly-regarded psychiatrist, Dr. Vinekar has been in practice since 1989, seeing patients at her private practice in Plainsboro, New Jersey. She specializes in the management of bipolar mood disorders, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and organic mood disorders in the elderly.
In the clinical arena, she has focused her interest in geriatric psychiatry, providing geropsychiatric consultations since 1993. She has done in-services for staff as well as has provided pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options in dealing with the behavioral manifestations of Alzheimer’s disease.
Specializing in college mental health, her practice also combines psychopharmacological interventions with individual psychotherapy. Dr. Vinekar individualizes the treatment plan to fit each patient’s needs, combining medication with counseling.
Having been active in teaching medical students, she is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She also has an appointment to the active staff in the Department of Psychiatry at Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center in Plainsboro.
Educated in India, Dr. Vinekar graduated with her medical degree from Grant Medical College in 1983. Upon relocating to the United States, she went on to complete her residencies in psychiatry at Nassau University Medical Center in New York and Trenton Psychiatric Hospital in New Jersey.
Subsequent to her education, she attained board certification in adult and geriatric psychiatry through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the professions of psychiatry and neurology.
For her dedication to the work of the psychiatric profession, Dr. Vinekar has been elected a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (DFAPA).
From June of 2002 until June of 2003, she was President of the Central Chapter of the New Jersey Psychiatric Association. She also served as Chair of the Geriatric Committee of the New Jersey Psychiatric Association, and continues to serve on the legislative advocacy council of the said Association.
