Get to know Obstetrician-Gynecologist Dr. Leon Smith Jr., who serves patients throughout the State of New Jersey.

A highly accomplished and respected obstetrician-gynecologist, Dr. Smith Jr. is the Director of Maternal/Fetal Medicine at Saint Barnabas Medical Center and is a valued member of the team at New Jersey Perinatal Associates. He has a particular interest in prenatal diagnosis and obstetrical infections, and has extensive experience contributing to peer-reviewed journal articles and presenting lectures on a range of topics in his field.

In addition to his expertise in prenatal diagnosis and non-invasive testing, he offers a range of other services including genetic counseling and screening, preconception counseling, and risk assessment and planning during pregnancy. He is highly skilled in managing pregnancy-related complications such as preterm birth prevention, multiple gestations, and placental abruption and vasa previa. He is also experienced in addressing medical complications of pregnancy, including hypertension and preeclampsia.

Throughout his academic career, Dr. Smith Jr. received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his residency in obstetrics & gynecology at Tulane University Affiliated Hospitals. He later completed his fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Baylor College of Medicine.

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (FACOG), the doctor is board-certified in obstetrics & gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine by the  American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). He is also an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, and the Infectious Disease Society of America.

Obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN) is the medical specialty that encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics (covering pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period) and gynecology (covering the health of the female reproductive system – vagina, cervix, uterus, ovaries, and breasts).

As a testament to his success, Dr. Smith Jr. has been recognized as a Top Doctor by several prestigious organizations, including Castle Connolly, New York Magazine, and Inside Jersey.
