Get to know Nephrologist Dr. Morton Kleiner, who serves patients in New York, New York.

With expertise in hypertension and dialysis care, Dr. Kleiner is an highly-experienced nephrologist who is affiliated with Staten Island University Hospital, a major tertiary referral center in Staten Island, New York City, New York. It is a two-campus, 668-bed specialized teaching hospital and a part of Northwell Health.

Alongside his clinical role, he serves as an Assistant Professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell in East Garden City, New York. He has research interests in iron deficiency and rehabilitation medicine for end-stage renal dialysis patients.  

A 1974 graduate of New York Medical College, Dr. Kleiner went on to complete his residency in internal medicine at North Shore University Hospital. This was followed by a fellowship in nephrology at NewYork-Presbyterian /Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Passionate about his profession, the doctor is board-certified in internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, which is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Highly regarded in the medical community and the Staten Island community-at-large, Dr. Kleiner is the recipient of: Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2011, 2012, 2014, 2015), On-Time Doctor Award (2014, 2015), and Patients’ Choice Award (2012, 2014), among others. 

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that concerns itself with the kidneys. It is the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. Nephrologists have advanced training in treating kidney disease. They diagnose and treat kidney failure, as well as help patients by prescribing medications, offering special diet advice, and coordinating dialysis care when the time comes.
