His journey to Fairfield, CT, started at the University of Iowa – one of the top five dental schools – where he earned a Doctorate in Dental Surgery. He continued his studies at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics Department of Otolaryngology as an American Cancer Society fellow, gaining post-graduate prosthodontics training. He dedicated himself to research and education as a professor at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine. Through articles and teaching, he focused his work on Dental Implants and Cosmetic Dentistry. He was then elected to the Board of Directors of the American College of Prosthodontics, the youngest member to date. Dr. Cuevas also founded the Connecticut Section of the American College of Prosthodontics. His other offices have included sitting on the Board of Governors of the Connecticut State Dental Association, Past President of the Bridgeport Dental Association, Chairman of the Ethics and Judicial Committees of the Connecticut State Dental Associations and current member of the following: American College of Prosthodontics, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, American Academy of Implant Dentistry, American Dental Association, Connecticut State Dental Association, and the Bridgeport Dental Society.

Will my impacted wisdom tooth eventually stop hurting?
If impacted wisdom teeth are hurting they most likely need to be removed surgically. They will not get better on their own and more then likely get worst. It is not uncommon for the pain to subside temporarily but them come back with a vengeance. Please consult with an oral surgeon as soon as you can. READ MORE
Can a crown last a lifetime?
The normal life span of a dental crown is 10-15 years. Depending on how well you can keep it free of plaque, your diet, and most importantly your genetics the crown could go to 20. If you plan on living past 62 then it will not make it. Most people do not change their crowns in a timely manner. They wait until something breaks or hurts, the appropriate time is when it quits protecting the underlying tooth. What causes dental bridges to fall out?
Usually the supporting teeth or retainer tooth structure rot due to decay or the force of continuous biting causes fatigue failure (like a bridge over a river) . Can you get implants with bad gums?
Yes, it is said that dental implants are the only cure for bad gums. Implants have a tighter seal than teeth and bacteria infection rates are much less. READ MORE
What are the disadvantages of dental bridges?
Many. You increase the potential for root canal and recurrent decay of supporting teeth. Robbing Peter to pay Paul. Many time you have to cut down perfectly good teeth. The area wear you are missing teeth will continue to lose bone and your jaw bone will thin. You will need to thread floss under the dummy tooth every day to avoid decay. How do you know if your cavity is deep?
Dental decay is your tooth rotting. The best way to tell how deep it has penetrated your tooth is with a dental x-ray. Even then, depending on the location, your diet and your hygiene; decay can be slow growing or rapid. Rapid penetration decay is always deeper than the x-ray reveals. Can you be allergic to zirconia crowns?
No. Zirconia crowns have never been shown to illicit an immune responses in people. This material has been used in joint replacement with no know problems. The fit and expertise of the dentist is the most determining factor in whether you will have a problem with your crown or not. How much tooth should be left for a crown?
If the tooth is vital, nerve is intact, at a very minimum 2 mm of stable tooth structure above the gum line. This means that 75 % of the tooth structure is gone. If any more is gone then a root canal is advised so that I reinforcing post and core can be utilized. What is a healing cap on a dental implant?
It is a temporary screw that is used between 2-6 months to allow the gum tissue over the implant to heal and mature. It is normally replaced with a definitive or final abutment. It is generally made of titanium or resin and reusable. Some are one time use only. READ MORE
Can I get a dental implant with braces?
Yes the wire is easily removed and re-positioned. The key is the dental implant needs to be placed in harmony with the anticipated position of your teeth and corresponding bite. How long does a typical crown last?
How they are crafted, the skill level of the dentist and how you maintain and take care of your crowns are just a few of the factors involved. A dental insurance company will reimburse for a new crown on the same tooth between 5-7 years.On average many crowns can last 12-15 years. How are veneers applied to your teeth?
It depends on the reason that you want veneers in the first place. Changing color, shape, or size of your teeth each require a different type of veneer. Consult a dentist with a significant amount of training and experience. I restored my first veneer 30 years ago. Is a crown necessary after a root canal?
Yes, but it depends on how much tooth structure was compromised during the root canal therapy and any cumulative restorative procedures. As a general rule if more than 50 % of the clinical crown is missing a crown is the only way to predictably protect the tooth from splitting or cracking. READ MORE
How do you stop a hole in your tooth from hurting?
I am sorry that you are having pain. Oil of clove will stop it for a while but the best and long term fix is to see a dentist as soon as possible. It does not get better on its own and will only get worst. If you wait too long the tooth will rot beyond repair and it will have to be extracted. Please don't wait that long. READ MORE
Can front teeth get dental crowns?
Yes they can. Crowns are usually needed when a large amount of tooth structure is compromised either from decay or trauma. If your teeth are intact and you are only looking to change the shape or color a more conservative treatment would be porcelain veneers. Do root canals cause health problems?
Root canal therapy is like everything else. When done correctly by someone with skill and training the results are almost guaranteed. Problems can arise but they are really few and the alternative is extracting the tooth and replacing it with a dental implant. What are the benefits of dental bridge?
The benefit of a dental bridge is that it is a relatively easy procedure that require 1-2 appointment to replace one or several missing teeth. The disadvantages are that now you are tying together several teeth and if one tooth has a problem the entire bridge may need to be replaced.
