About

Jessica Newman is an acupuncturist practicing in Long Beach, California. Dr. Newman evaluates and treats patients based on the concepts of oriental medicine. Acupuncturists complete their evaluations by getting a patient history and looking at and touching the body. Then, they place very fine acupuncture needles into specific points on the body. Stimulating these points and nerves is how Dr. Newman treats the patients condition. Many of the body's systems respond to acupuncture, and it can treat physical pain as well as emotional stress.

  • Relief from sciatica?

About 80% of my patients come to see me with sciatica and lower back pain-related issues. About 91% of them find immediate relief after the first session. Duration of healing depends on many factors; your health, the condition of damage, and the practitioner’s skill set so there aren’t any hard and fast answers. Some take a session or two, while others come for 10-20 sessions before finding relief and or healing. The cost differs per region and practitioner. I’ve seen acupuncture sessions run anywhere from $60-120, depending on those factors. READ MORE

  • How long does it take to fix a bulging disc?

This is a difficult question to answer truthfully because there are so many variables at play in healing damage from a disc bulge. It depends on your health, the severity of the rupture, the skills of your practitioner, and your consistency with treatment, to name a few. I’ve had patients (about 91%) walk away from the first treatment with immediate relief, and then some who don’t see a change for a while. First off, check around your town who comes highly recommended for this sort of problem (maybe a group page on social media for your city you can ask for recommendations), take a consultation with the practitioner, as personal rapport and comfort do play a hand at results. Secondly, once you find a recommended practitioner with whom you feel a rapport, ensure you are as consistent with treatments as you can afford, try to do at least 4-10 treatments in a row (1-2 a week). All the best to your healing and health! For private consult, contact me at newmansacupilates@gmail.com READ MORE

  • Leg problem after an acupuncture session?

It sounds like your sciatic nerve was inflamed; it’s possible that a muscle spasm irritated the nerve, or that your hips became misaligned. I can recommend doing this stretch to relieve the tension and allow the position to return to normal: https://youtu.be/KYVqtcd7rW8 READ MORE

  • Burning post acupuncture treatment?

For this point on the side of the wrist, it is a very minuscule point, once which is between a tendon and a bone. It’s easy to feel nerve tension if the needle is just slightly close to it. If you felt burning and tingling, it was likely close to the nerve. In my practice, if the patient feels tingling or burning with this point, I will always readjust it. The sensation you're having the next day should go away. However, if it persists, it is important you let the practitioner know. READ MORE

  • How long does an acupuncture session last?

An acupuncture session duration depends a great deal on the practitioner. The acupuncture needles need to be sustained for a minimum of 20 minutes in order for the Qi to circulate properly. Depending on a practitioner’s bedside manner, the rest of the session could last anywhere from 15 minutes until they feel you’re “done.” For myself, first time patient’s appointments are generally 1.5 hours long.
