What is acupuncture and how does it help?
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese method of healing which dates back thousands of years ago. Some say 2500-4500 years ago are the earliest recordings of this method being utilized. It helps with a variety of conditions by smoothing our the life force energy, or qi, which helps our bodies function optimally. It serves to balance the body by soothing and supporting the corresponding imbalanced organ and body systems. It’s a very complex modality. The best way to describe in a western perspective is that it creates a neurocascade pd brain activity which puts best functioning into action. It helps by balancing the body to reduce the results of imbalance, such as disease, pain, and varying conditions. Thanks and all the best! READ MORE
Is acupuncture good for sciatica?
Thank you for your question about sciatica and acupuncture! When I was blessed to work for two LA Urgent Cares, I was with the Occupational Therapy division. This meant that a majority of the patients I was privileged to see had recently experienced a work related back injury. Many of these patients had sciatica. Oftentimes, they were sent to me as a last resort, after having already been to the pain specialists, Orthopedic surgeons, Physical Therapists, and even Chiropractors. I’m very grateful to report that a large number of these patients received immediate relief after just one treatment. Of course, results vary between practitioners and patients, however, about 91% of the patients I saw had this blessed experience. I’ve found Acupuncture and stretching to be a marvelous combination to relieve lower back pain, specifically sciatica. Having had the unique combinational training of also being a Pilates instructor, and a former Doctor of Chiropractic student, the relief of sciatic pain seems to be a careful combination of them, in addition to Acupuncture. Acupuncture works to soothe the inflamed nerves, release muscle spasms, and reduce inflammation. Chiropractic aims to align the spinal vertebral bones in optimal functioning fashion. Proper Pilates alignment allows recruitment of the weak, unused muscles, such as abdominals, latissimus dorsi to facilitate life changes to keep the results in tact. READ MORE
Is acupuncture a placebo?
What a great and brave question! I love it! The earliest texts on Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine date back thousands of years ago. The common number is anywhere from 2,000-4,500 years ago. Acupuncture and TCM is the combined knowledge, research, and notes of thousands of years of gathering information, experiential results, experimental data gathered, and the clinical results reached. Recently, there have been numerous scientific research studies both stating a placebo effect in Acupuncture, but more recently purporting the benefits of acupuncture, with impressive 86-91% success rates in many studies seen. As far as the placebo effect goes, I believe it could be a part of every type of healing treatment, as the brain is powerful. Our thoughts generate a neurotransmitter cascade, hormones, and emotions, which then transfer into motions and actions. Therefore, it seems impossible to me to remove the placebo effect. In fact, I've seen both cases, where patients referred to my clinic were open, and the treatment was swift and effective, and where they were negative and skeptical, and treatment results were insignificant. The latter group, I must say, was in the 9% range of the otherwise incredible results of relief I am blessed to often see in my clinic. The best example, however, to answer your question, is one I will never forget: An elderly man, around his late 70's, entered my clinic in a wheelchair, with 10/10 back pain. He was irate that his primary doctor referred him to me for treatment, completely skeptical. However, he was singing praises when he WALKED out of the clinic, with NO PAIN! So, I believe you can tell from my brief answer that it really depends on perspective. Is the research there to support Acupuncture as a bonafide method of healing? Absolutely! But, like the statistics used to validate research conclusions themselves, we are always plagued by our experiences and perspectives, which color every conclusion. Don't take my word, or anyone's word for it! Try Acupuncture for yourself with a qualified, caring, kind practitioner, with whom you feel a connection. Connections are everything! All the best! How many sessions of acupuncture do you need for back pain?
Great question. It really depends on the patient as well as the practitioner. I’ve had patients who arrived in a wheelchair, due to back pain. Then they walked out of the clinic with no pain, just after first treatment! So, it depends on many variables, but these are the top two main issues with how many treatments. It’s not an exact science. In holistic healing, it is a process. Patience and consistency, along with positivity, help furnish desired results more effectively. READ MORE

Can acupuncture ease sinus problems?
Acupuncture can ease and relieve sinus problems. Through clinical experience, it takes time and consistency to heal. I’d recommend going at least once a week for a while. Perhaps work out a deal with your local acupuncturist who specializes in sinus issues. Another suggestion is to eliminate dairy and sugar from your diet, which highly aggravate congestion. READ MORE
What should you do after an acupuncture session?
After acupuncture, take your time to get back into your body again, kinda like after meditation or yoga. Wiggle your fingers and toes. Breathe deeply. Perhaps you may visualize white light entering your body, growing brighter, and lighting up all around you, 3 feet in every direction. Only positivity may enter your sphere! Then, start moving as needed. Depending upon if you’re face up or down, move very slowly. If you’re face up, roll onto your side, using mostly abdominals and arms and legs to arise to sitting, instead of your neck. *Sit quietly a few moments. Drink some warm water (suggest you have ready beforehand, or have your provider bring to you.)* If you’re face down, slowly move your hands underneath your shoulders, and use your abdominals to push into a child’s pose (sitting back on your heels, knees wide, head resting down, arms spread forward. Slowly, a few breaths and stretches later, pull your abdominals to your back, slowly restack your spine sitting on your heels. Head is the very last thing up, abdominals leading the movement, rounding up. Same as with face up* Great question! As for the acupuncture Itself, it’s best to breath deeply in preparation, relaxing your body, for each point, exhale, asking the provider to let you know, with a count of three, when insertions take place. All the best to you for your acupuncture experience! READ MORE
Can acupuncture cure food allergies?
Hi there, Thank you for your question. While acupuncture has been known to ameliorate a variety of imbalances, due to conflicts of interest, we are unable to say “cure.” In my clinical experiences, allergies seem a complicated cocktail of variables. READ MORE
Is acupuncture for your neck safe?
Great question. You’re right: the neck is a sensitive area! However, acupuncture for the neck, with someone certified, licensed, regulated, should be perfectly safe. I find it’s best to have a connection with the practitioner and to breathe, such as in yoga, in order to make the experience more relaxed and pleasurable! Also, I recommend for the neck to seek a practitioner who is also proficient in Tui Na, Chinese bodyworks similar to, but predates chiropractic! Is it normal to feel worse after acupuncture?
Great question. While everyone has differing reactions to their first acupuncture treatment, holistic healing, in general, sometimes we must get worse temporarily, to get better. It’s like a dam that ruptures. When we initially move the water past the obstruction, the pressure releases, which is stressful to the system at play. However, with persistence and consistency, removal of toxic substances like nutritional and pharm-hinderances, we are able to function at a more optimal level! READ MORE
Can acupuncture be dangerous?
Hi there, Acupuncture is extremely effective in treating back pain. If you go to a licensed professional, who is careful and a referred source all the better, risk of dangers are minimal. It would take a lot of ignorance and error to make dangerous this ancient Chinese method of effective healing which is nearly 5,000 years old. Best of luck! READ MORE

Can acupuncture be used to treat depression?
As far as depression is concerned, I’ve personally and clinically found nothing more naturally effective than acupuncture to alleviate depression! I’ve even had patients getting treated for other issues also find incidental relief of their 60-year long depression! Of course, exercise and diet also play a role. I chose yoga and Pilates to assist me to overcome my own lifelong depression. As well, it’s important to get the proper essential nutrients each day (I recommend vegan protein and superfoods powder (such as amazing grass) a shake mixed with coconut water). May your friend and all those suffering soon find relief! READ MORE
When is acupuncture not recommended?
In being a part of holistic medicine and healing for as long as I have, I’ve seen where everything and everyone has their limits. This is why it’s important to strive to treat each patient to their individual needs and not as a textbook. READ MORE
