Can you treat autism?
Yes a psychiatrist can treat autism. I would want a psychiatrist with solid training in this area. If you live near a medical school you could call the Department of Psychiatry and ask them for a referral. READ MORE
Can ADHD be corrected?
Yes ADHD can be corrected. You didn’t say how old your daughter is but ADHD is a seen frequently in children and adolescents. Medications work but so can therapy. Find a therapist trained to treat this disorder. The therapy can be particularly effective in bright young people. There are many, many medications with FDA approval for ADHD. These include stimulants, anti-depressants, and other medications with more atypical mechanisms of action. Good luck! READ MORE
Can alcohol addiction be cured with medications?
Over the years I've become increasingly impressed by the capacity of alcohol to cause terrible misery. I once read an article that addressed the actions of alcohol upon entering the system. It said that alcohol was a very "promiscuous" little molecule. By that he meant that because alcohol is such a tiny entity it can enter any cell it wishes to...therefore it can attack every system in the body. And alcohol attacks women with particular intensity. There are several FDA approved medications to treat alcohol dependence....Antabuse, (Acamprosate)Campral, Vivitrol (Naltrexone extended release injectable suspension, and Naltrexone. Each works in some to reduce cravings but none work in all. Do they "cure"? Maybe some people experience abstinence over a long enough period of time that they feel "cured". But as the first step of Alcoholics Anonymous says, "we admitted we were powerless over alcohol...." Relapse can occur years after one achieves abstinence. Was the individual cured? The combination of one of the various psychosocial treatments (AA, Smart Recovery to name just 2) and medication might improve the long term outlook. The treatment of concurrent depression with antidepressants is also a powerful therapeutic strategy. I have worked with clients with many years of abstinence--no longer on an approved medication. They may attend AA meetings sporadically or not at all. People with long term sobriety define recovery in a myriad of ways. READ MORE

Get to know Psychiatrist Dr. Barbara Lampert.
She entered Medical School knowing she’d pursue a career in psychiatry, a lifelong interest of hers. She got her MD degree at Downstate Medical School, did her internship at Georgetown University, and her Residency was completed at UCLA in Los Angeles. She was Board Certified in Psychiatry in 1987.
After completing her residency she joined the newly opened Center for Mood Disorders in Los Angeles, a true state of the art practice specializing in cutting edge psychopharmacologic and therapeutic treatment of mood disorders. Clinicians were all graduates of the UCLA psychiatric program. She also opened a private practice in Los Angeles and was an Assistant Clinical Professor at UCLA.
A growing interest in teaching and academia led to a move to Santa Fe, New Mexico where she joined the faculty of The University of New Mexico Medical School in Albuquerque and opened the first Affective Disorders Clinic, teaching psychiatric residents and treating severely ill patients. She opened a private practice in Santa Fe as well, and in addition, joined a Dialectic Behavior Therapy Consultation Team where she met weekly with team members for years. In addition she was trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
After many years in Santa Fe she relocated to Palm Springs, California in 2008, taking a position at Michael’s House, a highly respected rehab facility treating co-occurring disorders. She had seen the rates of substance dependence in her Mood Disorder patients and her interest in the growing epidemic of addiction fueled her decision to begin a serious study of addiction. She took and passed the American Board of Addiction Medicine’s first examination in Addiction Medicine in 2011.
She is now doing telepsychiatry and hopes to combine her knowledge of various forms of psychotherapy with her unique skills as a psychopharmacologist. In particular, she hopes to help patients dealing with prolonged grief. The trauma of the losses many experienced during the pandemic, the political instability around the world, the losses from gun violence, spousal abuse, sex trafficking of children, racism, anti-Semitism, drug overdoses; these catastrophes have now manifested in increased suicides, depression, and intolerable grief.
