Get to know Emergency Medicine Physician Dr. James Stubblefield, who serves Monterey County as the EMS Medical Director and also as the lead emergency physician at Mee Memorial Hospital. Dr. Stubblefield received undergraduate degrees in electrical engineering and bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania, then continued his studies by earning his medical degree from the Drexel University College of Medicine. Dr. Stubblefield completed an internship at the Letterman Army Medical Center and a residency in emergency medicine at the Madigan Healthcare System. He has been certified in emergency medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. With over twenty years of experience in emergency medicine, Dr. Stubblefield is especially skilled at diagnosing and treating patients with life-threatening conditions like a heart attack, drug overdose, shock, or massive bleeding. He maintains professional memberships with the American College of Emergency Physicians and the California Bay Area Regional Trauma Care Committee, which allows him to stay up-to-date on developments in his field. He is also an active member of EMDAC, the Emergency Medical Directors Association of California. Dr. Stubblefield has previously worked as the Medical Director of the emergency medicine division with the Salinas Valley Memorial Health Care Systems and received many awards and commendations for his service in the United States Army. As a lieutenant colonel, he was responsible for all emergent and urgent care at Fort ord , as well as , instrumental in facilitating the smooth closure of the post. He has been given a Bronze Star Medal ,the Air Medal for his service in Desert Storm, two Meritorious Service Medals, two Army Commendation Medals, the Expert Field Medical badge, Flight Surgeon Badge,the Air Assault Badge, and Jungle Expert designation for his service while on active duty in the military.. Emergency Medicine is the branch of medicine concerned with the care of illnesses or injuries requiring immediate medical attention. As first-line providers, emergency physicians manage patients of all ages with undifferentiated ailments of all types. They are primarily responsible for initiating resuscitation and stabilization and beginning investigations and interventions to diagnose and treat illnesses in the acute phase. Emergency physicians generally practice in hospital emergency departments, pre-hospital settings via emergency medical services, and intensive care units, but may also work in primary care settings such as urgent care clinics. Emergency physicians may subspecialize in disaster medicine, medical toxicology, ultrasonography, critical care medicine, hyperbaric medicine, sports medicine, palliative care, or aerospace medicine. In addition to his work with Salinas Valley Memorial Health Care Systems, Dr. Stubblefield is active staff at Mee Memorial Hospital. The philosophy of his practice is to treat the patient, rather than the condition, and allow those patients to receive the most advanced, up-to-date treatments possible.
