Is psychotherapy effective for the elderly?
Yes. Psychotherapy can be very effective for depression in the elderly. READ MORE
How to explain what's going on to someone with dementia?
This is a challenging problem. If their short term memory is quite impaired, they won't remember you telling them what's going on. When you do, they might not understand. I would simply say that I can't get there right now, but will do so as soon as I can, without trying to explain the whole situation. READ MORE
My mother is very fearful of death and she needs help?
If she hasn't responded to your efforts so far, I would recommend finding a good therapist who works with the elderly to further evaluate and deal with this issue. READ MORE
How is dementia different from Alzheimer's?
Dementia is a syndrome of declining cognitive functions, such as memory, language, performing tasks, decision making, etc. There are many causes of dementia, the most common of which is Alzheimer's disease, which has a classic presentation and brain changes that differ from other causes. An analogy would be arthritis, a syndrome involving pain and inflammation of the joints. There are multiple causes of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, et. al. READ MORE
Why am I always sad?
Yes, you should see a psychiatrist for this. If one is not available, talk to your primary care physician. Depression can take many forms and can look different in the older population. READ MORE
My friend doesn't take care of her mother. Is this elder abuse?
Have you spoken to her and do you know the whole story? If not you may want to do so if she is a close friend. Otherwise, an appropriate next step is to call Adult Protective Services or it's equivalent in your state. They will investigate the situation and determine if elder abuse is present. READ MORE
My mother is 80 years old and has severe anxiety. Should she really be on xanex?
Xanax (alprazolam) can be risky in the elderly. I wouldn't stop it abruptly, though, as there are serious withdrawal consequences. There are better medications for anxiety, but she should see a psychiatrist, preferably a geriatric psychiatrist, to safely transition her to another medication. Psychotherapy may also be helpful. How can I help my grandmother with her depression?
She should be evaluated by a mental health professional. She may just need talk therapy, but might require antidepressant medication. I would also suggest a grief support group. READ MORE
My elderly mother has depression. What can be done for her?
You are correct that medications can sometimes cause depression. But there are multiple other possible causes. I would recommend having her evaluated by a geriatric psychiatrist, can more accurately pinpoint the nature and cause(s) of her depression and recommend appropriate interventions. READ MORE
My husband is starting to have delusions, what can I do?
There are numerous causes of late-life delusions, only one of which is Alzheimer's. The best thing you can do is have him evaluated by a geriatric or general psychiatrist or a neurologist. READ MORE
