Get That Heartburn Checked - It could save your life!
That annoying burning in your chest or acidic taste in your mouth after a big meal or a few too many cocktails is normal. However, if you are experiencing heartburn regularly, having trouble sleeping because of acid reflux at night, noticing food getting stuck in the mid chest, clearing your throat...
What causes acid reflux everyday?
This is a more complex issue than one would expect. The most common cause is a hiatal hernia. If you imagine the diaphragm, which moves up and down as we breathe, as a plastic garbage can cover, your stomach belongs below right under a small hole in that cover. Very often, that little hole weakens and the stomach gets pushed up above the cover. When that happens, the acid and other stomach secretions now irritate the esophagus causing pain, chest burning, cough, throat irritation, voice change, and even esophageal cancer. Go see a gastroenterologist to get that heartburn checked out. READ MORE
Can stomach problems make it difficult for a child to sleep?
Absolutely. There are so many possible causes of abdominal pain, from a simple intolerance to a food group to a disease such as Crohn's. Seek out a pediatric gastroenterologist as soon as you can. READ MORE
How do you know if your gallbladder needs to be removed?
In general, there are several reasons to have a cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) performed. The most common reason is the combination of right upper abdominal cramping pain (biliary colic) and an ultrasound that shows gallstones in the gallbladder. Another reason would be a person who experiences biliary colic without gallstones, but a HIDA scan showing a lazy or overactive gallbladder. This is called biliary dyskinesia. It is important to understand that a poorly functioning gallbladder is common but that an overactive gallbladder can cause biliary pain as well. There are also other reasons to undergo a cholecystectomy. Without too many details, some people who have polyps of the gallbladder, calcium in the wall of the gallbladder, sickle cell anemia patients, may need a cholecystectomy. I hope this helps.
