Back in the early days of his academic career, he received his medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 1959. He then went on to complete his internship at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center in 1960, and his residency in general surgery at the California Pacific Medical Center in 1961. Finally, he completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of California, San Francisco in 1964.

An authority in his field, the doctor is board-certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.
