Get to know Nephrologist Dr. Brenda C. Smith, who serves patients in Sewickley, Pennsylvania.

A specialist in the field of nephrology, Dr. Smith diagnoses and treats a host of diseases and ailments in adult patients. She is affiliated with Heritage Valley Sewickley.

Heritage Valley Sewickley provides comprehensive health care for residents of Allegheny, Beaver, Butler and Lawrence counties in Pennsylvania; eastern Ohio; and the panhandle of West Virginia. Academically, Dr. Smith graduated with her medical degree from the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University in 1981. She then went on to perform her residency at University Hospital in 1984, and her fellowship at VCU Medical Center in 1987.

With over four decades of experience, she is board-certified in internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that concerns itself with the kidneys. It is the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. Nephrologists have advanced training in treating kidney disease. They diagnose and treat kidney failure, as well as help patients by prescribing medications, offering special diet advice, and coordinating dialysis care or kidney transplantation when it becomes necessary.
