Dedicated to the care of at-risk newborns, Dr. Sharp is an attending neonatologist within the Neonatal ICU at University Hospital.

University Health Care System is anchored by the 812-bed University Hospital, and serves Augusta-Richmond County and the surrounding region. It is governed by the Board of Trustees of University Health Services, which serves voluntarily to help ensure that patients have quality medical services.

At the start of his academic career, Dr. Sharp graduated with his medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 1983. He then went on to perform his residency in pediatrics at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital & Clinics in 1986, and his fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas in 1989. He has been affiliated with Pediatrix Medical Group since 1998. He obtained a physician executive certificate from Auburn University in 2003, and an MBA with emphasis in organizational behavior from Brenau University in 2009. Dr. Sharp has received many awards. He has been active in his community. In 2019, he published the book Faith Fitness: Ignite the Power of a Fit Church Culture.

With over four decades of experience, Dr. Sharp is board-certified in pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The ABP exists to promote excellence in medical care for children and adolescents. Certification represents dedication by pediatricians, pediatric subspecialists, and pediatric trainees to the highest level of professionalism in patient care.

Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that consists of the medical care of newborn infants, especially the ill, or premature newborn. It is a hospital-based specialty and is practiced in neonatal intensive care units. Neonatologists generally diagnose and treat newborns with conditions such as breathing disorders, infections, and birth defects, as well as coordinating care and medically managing newborns born prematurely, critically ill, or in need of surgery.
