Get to know Family Physician Dr. Yaser Alobeid, who serves patients in Merrillville, Indiana.
Dr. Alobeid is a board-certified physician who practices family medicine with a special interest in treating obesity as well as preventing and treating its related conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and arthritis. He is the Owner & Operator of Family Medicine of Merrillville.
A leading Merrillville practicing family medicine physician since 2004, he has been providing Merrillville, Indiana and the surrounding Northwest Indiana area with medical exams and a variety of family medical care services; from children to adults. He also serves as a staff physician at Methodist Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital.
Harvard trained, Dr. Alobeid prides himself on treating each patient according to his or her specific and personal medical needs. As a result of this individualized and preventative approach, patients trust him to guide them through their family medicine and obesity management needs.
Although family medicine is his primary area of practice, over the past few years Dr. Alobeid started focusing on obesity management - partially inspired by his own weight loss journey and seeing the health benefits firsthand, while at the same time noticing how obesity has increasingly become an epidemic across the country. He now dedicates himself to helping patients treat the root causes of obesity, and partners with them to develop a sustainable, personalized plan to not only lose weight - but to keep it off.
Encouraging his patients to conduct “Weight Loss the Right Way”, Dr. Alobeid not only helps patients lose excess weight, but also leverages and sustains the weight loss to resolve and prevent other health issues that often arise as a result of obesity. His greatest professional enjoyment is helping patients reach their health goals without requiring surgery.
Originally from Syria, Dr. Alobeid graduated with his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Damascus. He came to the United States in 1997, completing his residency at The Methodist Hospital in Merrillville.
Since 2004, he has been board-certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine, and in obesity medicine by the American Board of Obesity Medicine.
Among his professional affiliations, Dr. Alobeid is an active member of the Obesity Society, the American Obesity Association, and the Obesity Act Coalition.
Family medicine is a medical specialty devoted to comprehensive health care for people of all ages. The specialist is called a family physician or family doctor. A family physician is often the first person a patient sees when seeking healthcare services. They examine and treat patients with a wide range of conditions and refer those with serious ailments to a specialist or appropriate facility.
To stay up-to-date on the latest practices and information in his primary fields of medicine, Dr. Alobeid attends industry conferences 2-3 times a year. He also invests in the latest technology to improve and better inform his patients’ obesity management. For example, his office uses the InBody Scan, which not only scans a patient’s weight, but how that weight is actually distributed throughout the body through water, muscle, and fat.
On a more personal note, Dr. Alobeid and his family reside in Valparaiso, and they grow their own vegetables and raise their own chickens to teach his children where food really comes from. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling and spending time with his family. His favorite place to vacation is in San Diego, and he speaks both English and Arabic.
