In regards to his educational background, he graduated with his medical degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara Facultad de Medicina in Mexico in 1979. After relocating to the United States, he completed his residency in emergency medicine at the SUNY Health Science Center at Stony Brook.

Recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (FACEP), the doctor is board-certified in emergency medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM). The ABEM certifies emergency physicians who meet its educational, professional, and examination standards.
